This film combines drama, archive and documentary interviews to examine Robespierre's year in charge of the Committee Of Public Safety - the powerful state machine at the heart of Revolutionary France. Contesting Robespierre's legacy is Slavoj Zizek, who argues that terror in the cause of virtue is justifiable, and Simon Schama, who believes the road from Robespierre ran straight to the gulag and the 20th-century concentration camp. The drama, based on original sources, follows the life-and-death politics of the Committee during "Year Two" of the new Republic.

It is the early 1300's and the treasury of France, under the rule of Philippe IV (Philippe le Bel or Philippe the Beautiful), is empty. The king decides the only solution is to raid the treasures of the Knights Templar (amongst others) and concocts various charges of treason, heresy and deviance against the Knights and their Grand Master Jacques de Molay. Having confessed under torture to the crimes of which he is accused, de Molay is condemned to be burned at the stake. With his dying breath he curses the king, the king's advisor (Guillaume de Nogaret), the pope (Pope Clement V) and the thirteen succeeding generations of their families. There follows one of the most dramatic periods in French history, half a century of political intrigue, murder, treason, war and famine, which ultimately culminates in the 100 Years War.

루마니아의 카르파티아 산맥에 위치한 지우 밸리에서 한 광산촌 노동자가 의문사한다. 국립수사국 소속인 검시관 드미트루 코스타(라즈밴 바실레슈)에게 처음 맡겨진 일은 바로 그 시체를 부검하는 것이다. 사체는 장기간 폐쇄조치됐던 탄광에서 발견됐고 며칠 후 또 다른 두 명의 노동자들이 거기서 사망한다. 코스타는 그 죽음들에 대해 의문을 제기하지만 상부에는 음침한 기운이 감돈다. 광산촌의 경영자들은 광부들 사이에서 소요가 일어날까 노심초사하고, 정부의 고위관료들은 은근슬쩍 사건을 은폐하려 애쓴다. 그리고 코스타는 협박전화를 받는다. 이에 코스타의 애인도 주춤하게 되지만, 오직 코스타만이 사건을 포기하지 않는다. 부패해가는 공산당 조직이 광산 안에 한 테러범을 가둬놓고 광산 노동자들의 사회를 분열시키고자 했던 것이다. 루마니아 작가 라스반 포페스큐의 소설에서 모티브를 얻은 는 한 탄광에서 있었던 실화를 바탕으로 하고 있다. 하지만 정부와 미디어는 사건을 중요하게 다루지 않았고 실제로 그 사건은 쉽게 망각됐다. 뤼시앙 핀틸리의 목표는 바로 그 박제화된 기억을 일깨우는 것이다. 그가 언제나 영화를 통해 질문하는 것은 바로 국가권력의 부조리한 미스테리다. 영화 속에서 코스타는 그토록 찾아 헤맸던 사건의 실체에 다가서지만, 살기 위해서 입을 다물어야 했음을 뒤늦게 깨닫게 된다. 그렇게 영화는 루마니아의 차우체스쿠 처형 이후, 집단적인 권력의 병폐에 도전한다. The topic of the film points out the condition of an intellectual in time of totalitarian dictatorship, which subjugated an island from where you can not run. The only alternative is collaborating with power and internment in a rehabilitation institute. A famous writer returns to his homeland to try to confront the terror of an oppressive regime, but he ends up being himself corrupted-thanks to the aberrant system.

In this allegorical fairy-tale, peaceful and warlike knights vie for the hand of a beautiful princess, while a discussion of disco goes on around them. She favors a peaceful knight, while her father and his advisors like the ones carrying around a lot of weapons.
