1969년 봄. 사우스 캐롤라인 주의 해안에서 조금 떨어진 야마크로우 섬에 새로 부임하는 백인 교사 팻 콘로이(Pat Conroy: 존 보이트 분). 백인이라곤 혼자 뿐이다. 흑인 아이들은 그의 이름을 제대로 발음하지 못하고 '콘랙'이라고 부른다. 그 아이들의 무지를 알게 된 그는 여러가지 방법으로 실질적인 교육을 통해 그들을 일깨우려 시도한다. 흑인 여자 교장 선생 스코트 여사(Mrs. Scott: 마지 신클레어 분)의 간섭을 받으며 지내나 아이들은 그를 따르고 마을 주민들은 콘랙 선생을 존경하게 된다. 그의 남다른 교육 방식에 제동을 걸려는 음모가 뒤에서 행해지고 장학관인 스케핑톤(Skeffington: 흄 크로닌 분)이 그를 마침내 해임시키고 만다. 재판 과정에서 싸우게 되나 결국 학교를 떠나게 되고 아이들은 그의 떠나는 모습을 바라보며 베토벤 교향곡 5번을 듣는다.
