이념적으로 검열되고 문화적으로 고립된 1980년대의 공산주의 국가, 루마니아에서 철의 장막 바깥의 삶에 대한 모든 이미지는 단절되었으며, TV는 프로파간다 프로그램으로 제한되어 있었다. 칙칙한 콘크리트 벽돌들로부터 식량 배급 대기줄에 이르기까지, 정부의 감시는 사람들을 공포에 떨게 만들며 그들의 이념 밖으로 한 걸음 내딪는 것을 금지시 해왔다. 그러나 모두가 볼 수 있는 자유로운 세상으로 들어설 수 있는 단 하나의 창이 있었다. 1980년대 중반 몇 천편의 헐리우드 영화들은 루마니아에 순조롭게 밀수되었다. 이 영화들은 루마니아에서 자유의 상징이 된 한 용기있는 여성 번역가에 의해 더빙되었다. 모든 아이들은 척 노리스와 장 클로드 반담 같은 액션 영웅들의 겁없는 이야기, 그리고 무엇보다 호화로운 소품과 배경에 매혹되었다. 루마니아 국민들은 거기서 처음으로 금지시되었던 것을 보았다. 음식이 가득 쌓여 있는 슈퍼마켓, 풍요로움의 과시, 최신 패션, 좋은 자동차, 그리고 무엇보다도 자유를. 찰리(윌 페인)는 절친 에드, 여자친구 에이미와 함께 루마니아에 도착한 직후 호텔 맞은편 아파트에서 벌어지는 경악스러운 장면을 목격한다. 불길한 느낌에 사로잡혀 강의실로 향한 찰리는 제리 댄드리지 교수(제이미 머레이)가 피의 백작부인 엘리자베스 바토리에 대해 설명하는 동안 그녀를 강하게 의심하게 된다. 이에 의문의 아파트에 숨어든 찰리는 엘리자베스 바토리처럼 젊은 여자의 피로 목욕을 한 뒤 젊음을 되찾는 제리의 모습을 훔쳐보다가 발각된다. 가까스로 제리의 손아귀에서 빠져나온 찰리는 그녀가 엘리자베스 바토리라는 사실을 에드에게 밝히고, TV 리얼리티 프로그램 ‘프라이트 나이트’를 진행하는 괴물 사냥꾼 피터 빈센트(숀 파워)에게 도움을 청한다. 하지만 찰리 일행과 함께 추적에 나선 피터는 지하철에서 제리를 보자마자 달아난다. 곧 뱀파이어의 정체를 드러낸 제리는 숫처녀의 피로 의식을 치르기 위해 에이미를 붙잡아 가는데...
