1837년 겨울, 프랑스 북부 노르 망디의 한적한 호텔. 영국인 지주 찰스 골드윈(Charles Godwin: 스티븐 딜런 분)과 영국에서 가정교사로 일하는 스위스 여인 엘리자베스(Elisabeth: 소피 마르소 분)는 사흘 밤을 함께 지내기 위해 그 곳에서 만난다. 태어나자마자 어머니를 여읜 엘리자베스는 아버지의 빚을 갚기위해 급히 돈이 필요했고, 찰스는 부유한 아버지의 유산을 상속받기 위해 대를 이을 자식이 필요한 상황. 결혼 직후 찰스의 아내는 낙마 사고를 당해 식물 인간이 되고, 찰스는 하는 수 없이 대신 아이를 낳아줄 여자를 구하게 된 것이다. 엘리자베스는 찰스의 신상에 대해 일체 알지 못한 채, 굴욕감을 참으며 첫밤을 보낸다. 그러나, 수치스러움은 시간이 흐르면서 묘한 쾌락으로 바뀌고, 어느덧 엘리자베스는 찰스를 향한 애절한 사랑으로 괴로워하는 자신을 발견한다. 사흘 후. 영국으로 돌아가는 배 위에서 엘리자베스와 찰스는 작별 인사를 나누고 담담히 돌아선다. 엘리자베스는 찰스의 딸을 낳고, 아이는 곧바로 찰스에게 보내진다. 7년후, 엘리자베스는 딸을 향한 그리움을 견디지 못하고, 찰스의 집을 수소문한다. 때마침 그 곳에서는 아이를 가르칠 가정교사를 구하고, 엘리자베스는 교사로 채용되어 딸 루이자(Louisa: 도미니크 벨코트 분)와 찰스가 살고 있는 영국 남부의 대저택으로 향한다. 찰스는 계약을 어긴 채 자신과 루이자 앞에 나타난 엘리자베스를 돌려보내려 하지만, 주위의 만류로 엘리자베스가 다른 일자리를 구할 때까지만 머물도록 허용한다. 어느새 일곱 살이 된 루이자는 고집스럽고 쌀쌀맞은 성격 탓에 가정교사를 수도 없이 내보내고 얼굴도 모르는 어머니에 대한 그리움으로 호숫가의 외딴 방에서 자기만의 세계에 갇혀 지낸다. 엘리자베스는 그런 루이자를 바라보며, 다시는 떠나지 않겠다고 마음먹는다. 그리고 찰스의 만류에도 아랑곳 않고, 루이자를 교육시키기 위해 힘겨운 나날을 보낸다.
