Graeme Clifford is an acclaimed Australian film director, his directing credits include the Academy Award nominated film Frances, Gleaming the Cube and the mini-series The Last Don, which received two Emmy nominations. Clifford was a leading film editor for over ten years, before he made an impressive feature directorial debut with Frances, the dramatic real-life story of actress Frances Farmer, which gained Academy Award nominations for Jessica Lange and Kim Stanley. His second feature outing was the Australian historical adventure-drama Burke & Wills which was chosen as a participant in the 1986 Cannes Film Festival.He followed up with the contemporary action-suspense drama Gleaming the Cube, starring Christian Slater, and Deception (a.k.a. Ruby Cairo), starring Andie MacDowell, Liam Neeson and Viggo Mortensen. Born in Sydney, Australia, Clifford obtained his wide-ranging experience in editing, special effects, sound recording/mixing, animation and assistant directing at Artransa Park, Sydney’s only film studio for many years. He received additional tutelage working under directors like Robert Altman and Nicholas Roeg. His collaborations with Altman include M*A*S*H, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Images and The Long Goodbye. For Roeg, Clifford edited Don't Look Now, for which he was nominated for a British Academy Award, as well as The Man Who Fell to Earth. Clifford’s other feature editing credits include Norman Jewison’s F.I.S.T., Sam Peckinpah’s Convoy, Bob Rafelson’s The Postman Always Rings Twice and the cult-classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Clifford’s television directorial credits are many and varied. They include episodes of Joan of Arcadia, The Guardian, Twin Peaks and Faerie Tale Theatre, and the movies Profoundly Normal (Kirstie Alley, Delroy Lindo), See You In My Dreams (Aidan Quinn, Marcia Gay Harden), Redeemer (Matthew Modine), Past Tense (Scott Glenn, Lara Flynn Boyle, Anthony LaPaglia) and Mario Puzo’s The Last Don Parts I and II, an Emmy-nominated 10 hour mini-series (Danny Aiello, Joe Mantegna, Jason Gedrick, Daryl Hannah). 노동 운동이 서서히 기지개를 켜기 시작하던 1937년의 오하이오주. 윈 탈보트(헨리 윌콕슨)의 트럭 회사에서 일하는 쟈니 코박스(실베스타 스탤론)는 트럭 운전사다. 탈보트의 회사에선 하루 14시간 노동을 하고, 노동자의 복지는 전혀 이루어지고 있지 않으며, 일하다가 파손된 트럭마저도 개인이 보상해야 하는 등 노동 조건이 상당히 열악한 곳이었다. 노동자들의 불만이 점점 강해지면서 노동조합이 생기는데 그 대표로 마이크 모나한(리차드 허드)이 선출된다. 쟈니 역시 불합리한 노동 조건에 불만을 느끼던 터라 노조에 적극적으로 동참하여 노동자들에게 각성의 호소를 높이고 있다. 곧이어 노동자들의 시위가 벌어지고 회사 측에선 시위를 막기 위해 군대를 동원한다. 노동자들과 군대 사이에 큰 싸움이 벌어지면서 많은 부상자들이 속출하는 가운데 노조 대표 모나한이 살해당하고 만다. 이 일에 대한 수습과 새롭게 노조를 이끌 주도자 역이 쟈니에게 맡겨진다. 지역 갱단의 일원인 빈스 도일(케빈 콘웨이)과 협력하여 대규모 파업을 주동하는 쟈니는 확고히 빈스와 한 팀이 되어 시위를 이끈다. 갱단들의 지지로 노조의 힘은 강해지고 재정 또한 넉넉해지지만 이것을 빌미로 빈스의 갱단들은 노조 일에 손에 대고, 점점 깊이 간섭을 하려 한다. 1950년대 되고, 쟈니는 이제 노동계에서는 대단한 거물이 되어 있다. 쟈니는 국제적인 노동조합의 리더인 맥스 그래엄(피터 보일)을 협박하여 그 자리를 차지하고는 노동계 최고의 자리에 오른다. 하지만 노동계에도 온갖 비리와 권모술수는 난무해 있었다. 얼마 후 미국 상원의원인 앤드류 매디슨(로드 스타이거)는 법의 이름으로 쟈니의 노동조합이 벌인 비리를 조사하기 시작한다.
