UFO가 나타나는 미국의 51구역 내 작은 마을 루너에 운전사도 없이 돌아다니는 트럭 한 대가 나타난다. 이 트럭은 온 마을을 미친듯이 질주하며 사람들을 치어 죽인다. 마을 주민들뿐만 아니라 관광객들까지 위협하는 트럭의 존재에 사람들이 공포로 떨고 있을 무렵 설상가상으로 통신이 두절되고 대기엔 치명적인 화학 물질이 방출되어 마을 밖으로 나가지 못하게 된다. 잭은 2주전에 코마 폭발로 흘러 들어온 우주의 미립자가 비정상적인 에너지 파장을 생성해 트럭이 지능을 갖춘 살상 무기로 변한 것이라고 주장한다. 주유소를 운영하는 레이는 트럭들끼리 하는 말을 듣고 탈출 계획을 세운다. 레이가 트럭에 연료를 넣어주는 동안 테드와 딸 애비는 헬기를 구하러 떠나고 이들은 무사히 산꼭대기의 헬기 안에서 만난다. 그러나 테드가 조종하고 있을 것이라고 생각했던 헬기에는 애비만 타고 있을 뿐 조종석은 텅 비어 있는데...
