엘리과 다니엘은 혐오와 폭력이 난무한 LA 외곽에 살고 한국계-미국인 형제이다. 둘은 아버지로부터 물려받은 신발가게를 유지하고자 애쓰지만, 늘 한쪽 눈 어딘가는 구타로 인해 판다처럼 멍이 들어있다. 그럼에도 굳세게 버티며 의리를 지키며 살아간다. 특히 11살 소녀 카밀리아를 가족으로 아끼면서 살뜰하게 살핀다. 로드니킹 재판에 무죄가 선포되던 1992년 4월 29일, 영화 안과 밖 모두 대참사가 일어난다. 영화는 다민족이 엉켜 살아가고 있는 미국 사회의 단면으로, 한국계 미국인과 아프리카계 미국인과의 폭력적 관계를 ‘웃프게’ 그려낸 작품이다. 흑백 화면 가득 불안정함과 불안한 기운이 넘쳐나는 영화는 의 한국계 미국인 판이라고 할 수 있겠다. 영화는 소수자들의 혈투 끝에 남는 것은 무엇일까?를 씁쓸하게 되뇌게 한다.
