리설련은 말 못할 이유로 남편과 합의 하에 위장 이혼을 한다. 하지만 예상치도 못한 남편의 배신으로 진짜 이혼을 하고야 만다. 남편을 원망하던 그녀는 이혼 무효를 호소하며 현과 시, 법원 등을 찾아가지만 그들의 무책임에 분개하게 될 뿐이다. 그 후 10년간 리설련은 베이징의 전국 인민대회 때마다 국가원수에게 자신의 억울함을 호소해왔다. 그녀의 줄기찬 이의 제기에는 부패하고 부도덕한 중국의 관료주의를 향한 풍자와 비틀기가 있다. 또한 여성을 향한 가부장적 시선, 이를테면 리설련을 두고 남편을 배신한 음란한 여자라며 반금련이라고 부르는 일 등의 허상을 짚는다.

Guangxi province, southern China, 4 Apr 2011. On the day of the Qingming (grave-sweeping) festival, 27-year-old Yang Jie (Huo Siyan) visits the orphanage in which she was raised after receiving a letter from its head (Li Zhu). When she arrives, however, the head denies she ever wrote to her. Along with the letter was a train ticket from Xijiang to Qingming that same evening and, after receiving some childhood mementos from the orphanage head, Yang Jie goes to catch the train. Tired from repeated nightmares and sedatives, she falls asleep in the waiting room and has a ghostly dream involving a child’s voice; waking up she finds someone has stolen a wig from her.

The movie viewed through a post-80's modern girl's eyes, focusing on the Zhongtiao Mountain Battle which lasted more than a month in 1938.

Ziyi has been haunted by the same dream for years: In the dream, she would stand alone on a wasteland, knowing that something is buried underneath. The only one who could give her comfort is her designer friend Eric, to whom she would reveal her weird dreams. She is approached by police sergeant Madam Ou to assist in the investigation of her missing ex-husband. Meanwhile, the cop is also tracking down her kidnapped nephew, whose whereabouts remain unknown even though his mother Becky has paid the ransom. One day, Ziyi wakes up to find a trail of mud at her bedside, raising suspicion that she may have killed her ex-husband in her sleep! Ziyi leads Madam Ou to the scene in her dreams, where the horrifying truth awaits them...

명나라 시대, 8백년 전 사라진 달마의 유해를 차지하기 위해 전국의 검객들이 한 곳으로 모여든다. 황실의 명으로 달마 유해의 반쪽을 보관하던 지앙(정우성)의 아버지는 달마의 유해를 노리는 암살단에 의해 살해당하게 된다. 아버지의 복수를 꿈꾸며 매일 같이 검술을 연마하며 조용히 살아가던 지앙은 얼굴도 바꾼 체 소박한 우편배달부의 모습으로 살아간다. 정체를 숨긴 체 살아가던 지앙은 같은 마을에서 비단 장사를 하는 ‘정징’(양자경)을 만나 사랑에 빠지고 결혼까지 약속하게 된다. 하지만 정징이 정체 모를 검객으로부터 공격을 받게 되면서 그녀의 정체가 서서히 밝혀지는데… 또 다시 강호의 전쟁에 휘말리게 되는 지앙! 그리고 결전의 순간 이들 앞에 모습을 드러낸 충격적인 한 사람! 비극의 검의 전쟁은 지금부터 시작된다!
