동화작가 샘(마이클 안가라노)은 그와 편지를 주고 받으며 사랑을 키우던 연상의 여인 조이(우마 서먼)가 자신보다 훨씬 능력 있고 안정적인 환경의 다른 남자와 곧 결혼을 하는 것을 알고 베프와 함께 무작정 그녀를 찾아 떠난다. 결혼식을 준비하던 파티장에서 샘을 발견한 조이는 어떻게든 그를 돌려보내려 하지만 샘은 더욱 더 저돌적으로 자신의 마음이 아직 그녀를 향하고 있음을 고백한다. 그런 샘을 계속해서 밀어내는 조이, 하지만 조이 역시 자신의 들러리와 친하게 지내는 샘을 보며 질투를 느끼는데... 조이는 샘에게 결혼 서약서 작성을 도와달라는 부탁을 하며 샘을 다시 찾는다.
