젊은 시절 레오는 첫사랑 돌로레스와 사랑을 나눈 뒤 아들을 낳고 행복하게 생활한다. 하지만 혼자 학교에 가던 어린 아들이 누군가의 테러로 사망하고 레오는 아들을 혼자 학교에 보낸 자신의 잘못을 탓하며 죄책감으로 괴로워한다. 레오는 아들을 생각나게 하는 돌로레스를 떠나 멀리 미국으로 이민 간 뒤 아름답고 능력 있는 아내 리타와 결혼하여 딸 몰리를 낳는다. 작가를 꿈꾸는 레오는 리타와 이혼한 뒤 조용한 그리스의 어느 섬에 정착하고 책을 쓰는데 전념한다. 그로부터 20여 년이 지난 뒤 레오는 몰리와 리타 그리고 돌로레스를 떠난 과거 자신의 선택을 후회한다. 우연히 딸 몰리를 연상시키는 젊은 여행자를 발견한 레오는 가족을 떠난 20년 뒤 다시 가족에게 돌아갈 수 있는 지를 묻는다. 자신의 질문에 어려울 것 같다는 여행자의 말이 마치 딸의 대답처럼 들리는 레오는 괴로워한다. 긍정적인 대답을 원하며 그녀가 있는 여객선으로 가던 레오는 정신을 잃는다. 쓰러진 레오를 발견한 사람이 레오의 수첩에 있는 몰리에게 연락하고 레오는 다시 미국으로 돌아오지만 정신은 과거에 집착하며 현실을 떠나 있는 상태다.
