바람둥이로 악명 높은 니키 퍼란티(캐리 그랜트)가 미국 최고의 갑부 로이스 클락(네바 패터슨)과 결혼하기 위해 대서양을 건너 뉴욕으로 향하는 배편에 올라있다. 배 위의 여성들은 세기의 바람둥이를 만날 수 있다는 사실에 흥분한다. 같은 배 위, 테리 맥케이(데보라 카)라는 아름다운 여성이 역시 뉴욕으로 향하고 있다. 우연한 계기로 니키 퍼란티와 테리 맥케이는 운명적인 만남을 갖고 테리의 약간은 건방진 태도에서 니키는 매력을 느낀다. 거부할 수 없는 테리의 매력에 이끌려 테리를 다시 찾은 니키, 두 사람은 이내 서로 끌리는 것을 느끼지만 테리는 이 관계가 더 진전되어선 안된다고 말한다. 니키뿐만 아니라 테리 역시 켄 브래들리(리처드 데닝)라는 사업가와 사귀고 있었고, 그 사업가는 테리가 시시한 나이트 클럽 가수였을 때부터 그녀를 돌봐오던 사람이었기 때문이다. 항해는 계속되고 두 사람은 의식적으로 만남을 자제하지만 그들의 움직임은 곧 배 위에서 관심거리가 되고, 그들의 만남은 뉴욕에까지도 소문이 전해질 위기에 놓일 정도로 빈번했다.

Joe Palooka goes blind during a fight. An operation restores his vision, but he's told not to fight for a year. His trainer Knobby has picked up another fighter, but gangsters are pressing him to fix fights. Joe decides to risk his eyesight to save Knobby's honor.

The ranch of Red Ryder (Allan Lane) and his aunt, The Duchess (Martha Wentworth), is being used as the training site for "Gentleman Jim" Corbett (George Turner) for his upcoming fight in Carson City, Nevada for the heavyweight championship against Bob Fitzsimmons (John Dehner). Molly McVey (Peggy Stewart), the daughter of a U.S. Senator, crusading against prize-fighting in Nevada, complicates matters soemwhat when she conceives the bright idea of having Corbett kidnapped, thus causing the cancellation of the fight. The two men (George Chesebro and George Lloyd) she hires to do the kidnapping also add to the complications by kidnapping Ryder instead of Corbett. Meanwhile, a gang of crooks, led by McKean (Roy Barcroft), descend on the town intent on looting the town and also making off with the fight proceeds.

샘 크레그(스펜서 트레이시)는 뉴욕 스포츠 기자다. 해외통신원 테스 하딩(캐서린 헵번)이 기고한 스포츠 무일함에 대한 논평에 분노를 느낀 샘은 반론기사를 실는다. 이 기사에 다시 테스가 반론기사를 실으면서 두사람은 만나게 되는 날까지 반론에 반론이 계속된다. 마침내 두사람은 만나게 되고 샘은 테스를 야구장으로 데리고 가면서 두사람의 논쟁은 끝나지만.. 두사람은 사랑에 빠지게 되면서 결혼하기에 이른다. 그러나 그들의 행복한 결혼 생활은 그들의 서로 다른 라이프 스타일로 인해 위기에 처하고 일에 중독된 테스를 견디다 못한 샘은 이별을 고하고 시골로 떠난다. 홀로된 테스는 허전함과 외로움에 느낀다. 여성운동가인 엘렌이 아버지와 결혼하게 되면서 엘런으로부터 모든 것을 이루웠지만 늘 외로웠다는 그녀의 말을 듣게 되면서 테스는 결혼에 대하여 진지하게 다시 생각하게 된다. 결국 테스는 샘을 찾아가고.. 생활이 바뀌지 않는한 서로에게 불행할 것이라며 거절하는 샘에게 아내로서 노력하겠으니 다시 시작하자고 하는데..

Young undefeated boxer Terry Dolan, who's been lying to his invalid mother about his career, confides to Maisie that he hates and is terrified by boxing and wants out. Not wanting to let down his best friend and manager Skeets Maguire, who has hopes of him becoming the next champion, he is reluctant to bring up the subject with him. Maisie convinces Terry to tell Skeets, whose unexpected reaction induces him to step into the ring again.
