연일 흉칙한 괴물에게 쫓기는 악몽에 시달리던 티나는 어느날 엄마가 외출해 집이 비자 친구인 낸시와 글렌, 로드를 불러 잠을 자게 된다. 이날 밤도 꿈 속에서 또 다시 흉칙하게 생긴 괴물에게 쫓기던 티나는 이것이 현실로 그대로 나타나 침대에서 무참하게 살해당한다. 그리고 티나와 동침했던 로드가 평소 품행이 좋지 않아 살인 용의자로 체포된다. 이 사건의 수사관인 낸시의 아버지는 딸이 말하는 악몽에 관한 이야기를 믿지 않는다. 한편 낸시도 학교에서 잠이 들어 전과 같이 꿈에서 괴물에게 쫓기다 이것이 꿈이라며 근처에 있는 뜨거운 것에 팔에 디어 그 고통으로 깨어나지만 깨어났을 때 팔에 화상이 남아 있었다. "하나 둘, 프레디가 다가온다. 셋 넷, 대문을 잠궈라. 여섯 여섯, 십자가를 가슴에. 일곱 여덟, 늦게까지 깨어있어라. 아홉 열, 잠들지 말고." 이런 이상한 가사로 된 노래를 부르며 욕조에서 목욕을 하던 낸시는 잠깐 잠이 들었다가, 욕조 속에 괴물이 나타나는 위기를 넘긴다. 결국 낸시는 괴물을 만나지 않는 방법은 잠을 자지 않는 것밖에 없음을 알고, 앞 집에 사는 글랜을 불러 자신이 악몽을 꾸는 것처럼 보이면 깨워달라고 부탁한다. 하지만 글랜도 잠이 들고, 낸시는 다시 꿈에서 괴물 프레디를 만나는데, 프레디는 로드가 있는 구치소에 침입하다가 다시 낸시에게 달려든다. 이때 낸시는 때마침 시계가 울려 꿈에서 깨어난다. 낸시는 글렌과 함께 로드를 찾기 위해 경찰서로 달려가지만 그는 이미 숨이 끊어진 후였다. 빨강 초록색 쉐타를 입고 흉칙한 얼굴에 긴 손톱칼을 가진 괴물 이야기를 하던 낸시는 결국 병원으로 데려가고, 낸시는 몸 상태를 체크받는다. 이윽고 잠이 든 낸시가 다시 심하게 몸부림치면서 악몽에 시달리다 깨어나는데 낸시의 팔에 상처나 나고 프레드 크루거라는 이름이 새겨진 괴물의 모자를 들고 있는 것을 본 어머니는 마침내 지하실에 숨겨두었던 괴물의 날카롭고 흉칙한 칼 장갑을 보이면서 프레드에 관한 이야기를 털어놓는데...

70년대 후반 미국. 한 도박장에 2인조 무장 강도가 난입해서 돈을 강탈한 후 대기하고 있던 차량에 몸을 싣고 달아난다. 차량을 운전하는 ‘드라이버(라어언 오닐 분)’는 신기에 가까운 운전 솜씨로 경찰의 추격을 비웃기라도 하듯 여유 있게 뿌리치고 유유히 사라진다. 사건을 담당한 ‘형사(브루스 던 분)’는 범인들이 폐차장에 버리고 달아난 도주 차량에서 드라이버가 사용한 사제 자동차 키를 발견한다. 용의자로 지목된 드라이버는 곧바로 체포되고, 도박장에서 사건을 목격한 사람들과 대면한다. 그런데 도주 차량을 운전한 드라이버를 가장 가까이서 목격한 여자 도박사(이자벨 아자니 분)는 형사의 추궁에도 불구하고 자신이 목격한 도주 차량 운전자가 아니라고 거짓 증언을 한다. 하지만 용의자로 지목한 드라이버가 범인임을 확신하는 형사는 다른 범죄자들을 동원해서 드라이버를 함정에 몰아넣기로 한다. 범죄자들은 형사의 계획대로 은행을 털기로 하고, 드라이버에게 접근해서 자신들의 도주 차량을 몰아줄 것을 부탁한다. 결국 이들 일당과 함께 은행털이에 나선 드라이버. 이들은 은행을 습격해서 20만 달러를 훔친 뒤 드라이버가 모는 차로 무사히 도주하는 데 성공한다. 하지만 수중에 거액의 돈이 들어오자 생각이 달라진 범인은 형사와의 약속을 어기고 드라이버를 해치우기로 결심한다. 그리고 드라이버에게 총구를 겨누는데...
