정년을 며칠 남긴 고참 형사 버트(Burt Simpson: 데브니 콜맨 분)는 마지막 건강진단에서 카드가 바뀌어 엉뚱하게도 시한부 인생을 선고 받는다. 그냥 죽는 것보다 근무 중에 순직하면 보험금 30만달러가 나온다는 것을 알고 버트는 가족들을 위해 순직 작전을 편다. 평소에는 몸을 사리던 버트가 생명의 위협도 무릅쓰고 위험한 사건에 뛰어들자 파트너인 어니(Ernie Dills: 맷 프로어 분)는 물론이고 경찰서 전 직원들이 깜짝 놀란다. 그러나 죽으려고 뛰어든 사건마다 죽지는 않고 그 대담성에 질린 범인들만 붙잡히자 상장과 훈장이 계속 쏟아지지만 비트는 속으로 답답하기만 하다. 결국에는 경찰도 함부로 죽이는 잔인하기로 유명한 악당두목 스타크(Carl Stark: 샌더 버켈리 분)를 스스로 찾아가지만 그의 끈질긴 생명력은 스타크도 감당하지 못한다. 고층 빌딩 한가운데서 쇠난간에 의지한 채 스타크가 죽여주기만 기다리던 버트는 동료인 어니로부터 병원 실수로 오진된 사실을 알자 다시 생명에 대한 뜨거운 애착심을 갖고 스타크와 대결 그를 처치하고 무사히 살아난다.
