조용하고 내성적인 성격의 소피는 상류층인 릴리브르씨 가족을 위해 일하는 가정부다. 이 집의 무능력한 부부와 버릇없는 두 아이를 위해 매일 ‘의식’과 같이 식사를 준비하고 청소를 하며 집안을 돌본다. 그런데 그녀는 자신이 글을 읽지 못한다는 사실을 숨기고 있다. 소피는 정열적이며 세상 물정에 밝은 우체국 직원 잔느와 친구가 되는데, 그녀를 위해 쇼핑 리스트를 읽어주기도 하고 릴리브르 가족에 대한 온갖 이야기들을 들려주기도 한다. 잔느가 자신의 우편물을 훔쳐본다고 의심해 오던 릴리브르씨는, 소피에게 잔느가 4살짜리 소녀에 대한 살인혐의를 받은 적 있으며 나중에 방면되었다는 사실을 얘기해준다. 그렇게 서로의 불신이 쌓여갈 무렵 소피가 글을 읽지 못한다는 사실이 발각되고 항상 부르주아 가족으로부터 무시당한다고 생각했던 소피와 잔느의 분노가 폭발하게 된다.

세상이 황폐하고 식량을 못구하는 절박한 상황에서 사람의 고기를 먹는게 당연시 되는 기묘한 시대. 푸줏간 간판을 내건 한 낡은 건물에 갖가지 성격의 사람이 살고 있다. 어느날 전직 서커스 광대 출신인 루이종이 푸줏간 주인이 낸 광고를 보고 찾아온다. 잡일 인부로 채용된 루이종은 계단에서 우연히 푸줏간집 딸 줄리를 만나게 되고 둘은 서로 가까워 진다. 푸줏간 주인은 루이종을 계속 죽일 음모를 꾸미고 루이종은 매번 위기를 모면한다. 위기를 느낀 줄리는 지하세계의 지하인간들을 찾아가 도움을 청한다. 한편 푸줏간 건물의 세입자들은 굶주림에 지쳐 푸줏간 주인과 함께 루이종을 죽이러 나간다. 사람들에게 쫓긴 뤼종은 쥴리와 함께 목욕탕 안으로 도망쳐 들어가고, 함께 옷을 벗어 배기구와 틈새를 틀어막아 목욕탕 안 가득히 물을 채운다. 급기야 현관문을 부수고 들어와 목욕탕 문을 열던 사람들은 오히려 맹렬하게 밖으로 터져 나오는 물에 휩쓸려 계단으로 굴러 떨어지고 만다. 분노에 치를 떠는 푸줏간 주인. 나락은 건물이라 중앙 바닥이 무너져 내린 목욕탕에서 간신히 변기를 붙자고 매달린 뤼종을 향해 그는 목욕탕 아랫층에서 뤼종을 향해 도살용 칼을 던지지만 빗나가고 때마침 트로글리디스트에게 납치되었다가 돌아온 쁠뤼스가 뤼종의 부메랑을 건넨다. 푸줏간 주인은 다시 한번 뤼종을 향해 힘껏 부메랑을 던지지만 부메랑은 다시 돌아와 자신의 이마에 꽂히고 만다. 건물의 옥상, 상황은 정리되고 처음 뤼종과 쥴리가 함께 연주하던, 단조롭지만 애조를 띤 음악 소리가 흘러 나온다. 뤼종과 쥴리가 평화롭게 톱과 켈로의 이중주를 하고 있고, 그 옆에서는 따삐오까 부부의 두 아들이 이들의 연주를 흉내내고 있다.

선교사의 사명을 가지고 탄광촌에 정착했던 빈센트 반 고호(Vincent Van Gogh: 팀 로스 분)가 본격적인 전업화가의 길을 들어서려 하는 데에서 이야기는 시작된다. 이에 파리의 큰 화랑에서 미술품 중개상으로 취직해 일하고 있던 그의 동생 테오(Theodore Van Gogh: 폴 라이스 분)는 형의 천재적인 예술 세계를 가장 잘 이해하고 있으면서도, 바로 그 이유 때문에 형의 전업 선언을 반대한다. 벌써 오래 전부터 아버지의 이름으로 형에게 많은 액수의 생활비를 보내주고 있지만, 이제부터는 자기가 형의 그 괴상하고 인기없는 그림들을 팔아주어야 한다는 부담이 생겼기 때문이다. 한편 빈센트는 창녀 지앙(Sien Hoornik: 집 위가든 분)과 그녀의 딸을 사랑하여 서로 부담없는 동거 생활에 들어가고, 이 일 때문에 스승 모브에게 버림을 받기도 한다. 스승은 아카데믹한 제자가 되어 주길 원한 빈센트가 창녀와 놀아나는 것을 참을 수 없었던 것. 그러나 빈센트는 스승 모브 역시 자기 아내가 아닌 모델과 지내는 것을 참을 수 없다며 반발을 하고 둘은 쌈으로 관계를 끝맺는다. 상업적 화랑에서 일하는 테오는 능력을 인정받고 승진을 보장받는다.

Serafina, Pulcinella and Isabella are three lusty, beautiful members of a traveling theatrical troupe touring the French countryside in the 17th century, leaving in their wake a crop of broken hearts. This picaresque romantic comedy is based on the 1863 novel Le Capitaine Fracasse by Theophile Gauthier. In the story, the company stops at a castle owned by the scruffy young Baron de Sigognac, who is deeply smitten with the charms of the middle-aged (and somewhat morose) beauty Serafina. He decides to travel with the company, and Serafina perversely tries to get him to woo the youngest of the company, the newly bereaved Isabella.

He believes that the elite have the right to conquer where they can, that they should refrain from publicizing their improprieties, and he is rabidly pro-military.
