1부 줄거리 10명이나 되는 형제 속에서 예쁘게 자라난 캐서린. 책 읽기를 좋아하는 캐서린은 늘 책 속의 이야기로 상상의 나래를 펼치곤 한다. 한 번도 집을 떠나본 적이 없는 캐서린은 앨런 부부의 초대로 바스에 머무르게 된다. 앨런 부부와 함께 참석한 연회에서 우연히 만나게 된 헨리 틸니. 헨리와 춤을 추게 된 캐서린은 두근거리는 마음을 그녀의 일기장에 담는다. 한편 동갑내기 이자벨라를 사귀면서 둘은 단짝 친구가 된다. 그리고 이자벨라의 오빠 존도 캐서린을 좋아하게 되고 어느덧 캐서린은 두 남자의 사랑을 받게 된다. 2부 줄거리 헨리의 아버지인 틸니 장군은 캐서린을 자신의 고성인 노생거 사원으로 초대한다. 무언가 비밀을 숨기고 있는 듯한 그곳에서 캐서린은 틸니의 어머니의 죽음에 대해 의혹을 품는다. 어머니의 죽음에 대한 캐서린의 호기심과 지나친 상상력으로 헨리는 분노를 폭발하고, 그날 밤 틸니 장군에 의해 캐서린은 노생거 사원에서 쫓겨나게 된다. 집으로 돌아온 캐서린은 진정 사랑한 헨리에게 버림받았다는 슬픔에 어쩔 줄을 모른다. 그때 그녀에게 달려온 헨리. 아버지의 무뢰를 사과하고 자신에게는 오직 캐서린 밖에 없음을 고백한다. 그리고 자신과 결혼해달라는 그의 청혼을 행복한 입맞춤으로써 허락한다.

Denis Hopkins, a pilot, lives with his pregnant wife Valerie and has a comfortable lifestyle. When a gang of criminals led by the sadistic Ricky Barnes breaks into his home, he offers whatever the criminals want to protect his wife and unborn child, but the evil Ricky kills Valerie anyway. Their baby is saved, and later Barnes is arrested and sentenced to life in the maximum security prison, Sullen Voe. Denis fakes his own suicide, then assaults a police car in order to get himself arrested and sent to prison with the intention of tracking down and killing Ricky Barnes. He does not reveal his true name and is called John "What" by the prisoners and guards. Denis escapes from successive prisons, forcing his eventual transfer to Sullen Voe. When he reaches his objective, Ricky Barnes schedules a confrontation, but things do not quite turn out the way Denis had expected.

One of those emigrants, Luke Moran, dies in Korea and his home village is awash with rumours about the compensation the Moran family received on Luke’s death. John Doyle hears the rumours but remains silent. Ben Moran is John’s arch-enemy, a feud traced back to the Civil War. Eamon comforts and falls in love with Una Moran. His father feeling betrayed, blames Ben Moran for everything and is prepared to sacrifice Eamon in seeking vengeance as a contemporary Romeo and Juliet story unfolds.
