1차 세계대전 중의 비엔나. 손님을 찾아 거리를 헤매던 매춘부 마리에게 한 사내가 다가오고, 그는 마리가 상상하지도 못했던 제안을 한다. 고위 정보요원인 사내는 마리에게 스파이가 되라고 한다. ‘X-27’이라는 암호명을 부여받은 마리는 러시아 장교에게 접근해 기밀정보를 빼내라는 명령을 받는다. 그런데 크라나우 대령과 가까워질수록 마리는 그를 사랑하게 된다. 스턴버그는 스파이멜로의 통속적인 법칙을 따르는 듯하면서도 특유의 스타일 속에서 희생적 사랑에 대해 이야기한다. 지극히 영화적인 공간과 빛과 그림자로 만들어낸 가장무도회 장면은 단연 명장면으로 꼽힌다. 또한, 거리의 매춘부에서 스파이, 그리고 위험한 사랑에 빠지는 여인으로까지 변화무쌍하게 이어지는 디트리히의 열연 역시 압권이다.
