빅 에그라는 달걀 회사에서 수리공으로 일하는 로저는 어린 시절부터 무한한 상상력으로 발명을 하다가 사고를 내는 문제아였다. 가족들의 찬밥 대우를 받으면서 외롭게 성장한 로저는 어른이 된 후에도 어설픈 발명 도전과 어떤 물건을 보든지 뜯어보고 조립해야 직성이 풀리는 성격 때문에 끊임없이 사고를 일으킨다. 그런 로저에게 기회가 찾아온다. 담배회사 중역 출신인 텍스턴이 빅에그에 사장으로 부임, 니코틴을 첨가한 달걀 개발에 착수하면서 로저를 합류시킨 것. 로저는 또한 우연히 텍스턴의 여자 친구인 병아리 감별사 선데이를 만나 마음이 이끌게 된다. 어느날 로저는 자신의 차안을 냉동차로 개조하여 친구 린든을 태우고 운전을 하다가 블레이크가 작동하지 않아 낭떠러지로 떨어지는 사고를 당한다. 가까스로 차안에서 빠져 나온 로저는 맞은 편에서 낯선 비행물체를 발견하고 관심을 갖는다. 그곳에서 만난 외계인이 작은 비행접시를 선물하자 로저는 그것을 들고 집으로 향한다. 선데이가 평소 외계인의 존재에 관심이 많다는 것을 알고 있던 로저는 그녀에게 비행접시를 보여준다.
