종교와 용기, 그리고 인간의 죄의식을 다루는 영화. 1971년, 마로코스 대통령의 독재정치가 그에 달할 무렵의 필리핀. 깊은 산중의 아도라시온 수녀원(Adoration monastery)에 로르디스(Lourdes) 수녀가 새로 들어온다. 그녀는 곧 루스(Ruth) 수녀와 친해진다. 바깥 세상은 혼란스럽기 그지없지만, 수녀원은 늘 조용하고 평화롭다. 어느 날, 루스 수녀는 오빠가 실종되었다는 소식을 듣고 그를 찾기 위해 도시로 나가려 하지만, 원장 수녀는 기도만이 할 일이라며 이를 막는다. 그리고, 얼마 후 로르디스 수녀와 루스 수녀는 마을에 볼일을 보러 갔다가 돌아오는 길에 흉악한 남자들에 의해 성폭행을 당하고 만다. 로르디스 수녀는 임신을 하지만, 아이를 낳기로 결심한다. 이 불행한 사건 때문에 원장수녀와 베라(Vera) 수녀는 끊임없이 자책을 한다. 그리고, 두 분 수녀가 그렇게 자책했던 진짜 이유가 나중에 밝혀진다. 아도라시온 수녀원의 수녀들, 특히 원장수녀와 베라 수녀의 신앙심은 굳건하다. 하지만, 하느님이 시련을 내리셨을 때 그들의 신앙심은 한 인간으로서의 ‘용기’와 ‘양심’을 지키는 도구가 될 수 있는가? 바깥 세상의 혼란에 개입을 피하면서 그들이 지키려던 신앙심은 과연 어떤 의미가 있는가? 빈센트 산도발 감독의 <유령 (Aparisyon)>의 이러한 도발적인 질문은 매우 충격적으로 다가온다.
