무자비한 일본군 노동수용소에서 살아남은 테오 윤 링은 일본군 전범자들을 처벌하는 말레이시아 당국을 돕는 일을 벌써 몇 년 동안 해오고 있다. 그녀는 자신의 여동생을 학살한 일본 군인들 때문에 일본인을 증오하지만 동생의 영혼을 추도하기 위한 정원을 조성하기 위해서 구름 너머 산의 고원에 살고 있는 저명한 정원사 나카무라 아리토모를 찾아간다. 아리토모는 그녀의 요청은 거절하지만 그녀를 자신의 견습생으로 받아들인다. 윤 링은 차를 마시는 방에서 기거하면서 ′저녁 안개 정원′에서 일을 시작하고 스스로 정원을 설계하는 방법을 점차 배워 나간다.
