뉴욕의 법대생인 마이크(맷 데이먼 분)는 포커 실력이 프로급이다. 그러나 마이크의 여자친구 조(그레첸 몰 분)는 마이크가 도박판을 전전하는 것을 싫어한다. 이런 두 사람의 관계는 마이크의 고등학교 동창인 웜(에드워드 노튼 분)이 출감하면서 금이 가기 시작한다. 러시아 마피아와 줄이 닿아있는 테디 KGB(존 말코비치 분)에게 등록금 3만 달러를 모두 날린 후로 다시는 포커를 하지 않겠다고 다짐했던 마이크는 웜과 어울리면서 다시 도박의 유혹을 느끼기 시작한다. 한편 웜은 감옥에 가기 전에 졌던 만 5천 달러의 도박빚 때문에 목숨을 잃을 수 있는 위기에 처한다. 이에 마이크는 웜과 짜고 포커판을 돌며 빚을 갚을 돈을 모으기 시작한다.
