In the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, New China was faced with "internal and external troubles". Since the outbreak of the Korean Civil War, the U.S. military has repeatedly provoked the border between China and North Korea, and civilians have been brutally bombed. In order to maintain the hard-won peace and long-term stability for generations, in October 1950, the Chinese People's Volunteers entered North Korea, and the "Resist US Aid Korea" war kicked off.

1939년 겨울, 일본군 점령하의 중국 산둥성의 린청 역. 열차 수리를 관리 · 감독하는 ‘홍’은 철도 노동자들과 함께 지하 저항군을 결성하여 이곳을 지나는 적의 군수 열차를 습격한다. 역에서 잡일을 도맡아 하는 역무원 ‘왕’은 일본인 역장에게 신뢰를 얻지만 동료들로부터는 차가운 시선을 받는다. 한편, 이어지는 습격 피해로 만주에서 파견된 고위 관료 ‘후지와라’는 비밀리에 저항군 색출 작전을 펼친다. 어느 날, 일본군의 감시로 위축된 저항군은 최신 무기와 약품을 잔뜩 실은 열차가 린청 역에 임시 정차한다는 비밀정보를 입수한다. ‘후지와라’의 서슬 퍼런 감시에도 ‘홍’은 동지들을 위해 무기를 탈취하려는 계획을 세우는데…

제 2차 세계대전 중일전쟁 초기, 거듭된 패배로 많은 사상자를 내며 중국군이 퇴각하던 중, 제 524연대는 2만 명의 일본군으로부터 상하이를 지켜내라는 명령을 받는다. 외국인들과 부유한 중국인들이 모여 사는 조계지역 맞은편, 허름한 사행창고에 배치된 제 524연대는 우세한 전력으로 공격하는 일본군에 포기하지 않고 자폭까지 감행하며 나흘 밤낮 격전을 펼친다. 하천 너머 남의 일인 듯 구경하던 부유한 중국인과 외국인들도 이들의 투지에 감명받아 뜨겁게 응원하기 시작한다. 한편 쉽게 함락할 수 있을 줄 알았던 상하이에서 발목이 잡혀 초조해진 일본은 조계지역에 타격을 주더라도 격전지를 폭파할 계획을 세우고… 마침내 제 524연대 병사들은 창고를 나와 일본군의 무차별 총격을 피해 쑤저우 하천을 가로질러 조계지역으로 탈출해야 하는데…

상해 작은 골목길에 있는 심야식당. 남자 주인 혼자 식당을 꾸려나가고 사연 많은 손님들이 이곳에 와서 밥을 먹는다. 불치병에 걸린 가수, 두 다리를 못 쓰는 여학생, 그리고 여학생의 엄마, 난생 처음 권투 시합에서 이긴 선수, 그 선수를 힘들게 키워온 엄마, 낯선 도시에 생활을 꾸린 두 남녀 등 심야식당에서는 그들의 이야기들로 하루를 시작하고 또 마감한다. 그곳에 와서 함께 먹고 마시며 이야기를 나누며 함께 즐거워하고 슬퍼하며 또 다른 아침을 맞이하며 각자의 삶으로 돌아가 생활한다.

얼어붙은 강 아래에서 발견된 신원불명의 사체를 조사하던 베테랑 노 형사는 익사 사고가 아닌 살인 사건임을 직감한다. 한편, 다른 실종 사건을 맡아 조사하던 열혈 신참 형사는 신원불명의 사체가 자신이 찾는 실종자와 깊은 관련이 있음을 알아챈다. 단순한 사건이 아님을 알게 된 두 사람은 특별수사본부 ‘추흉자’ 를 설치하고 본격적인 수사에 돌입한다. 수사가 진행되면서 나타나는 단서들은 모두 한 곳을 가리키게 되는데…. 과연 두 사람은 진범을 찾아낼 수 있을 것인가?!
