The backstage of the Polish National Opera in Warsaw. Craftspeople from workshops and wardrobe are preparing costumes and set design for the upcoming premiere of one of the most important shows of the season. The film sheds light on the invisible work of dozens of people who are usually overshadowed by the artists performing on stage.

It is night in Warsaw. Two very different homes. In one, a father watches sports lying on the sofa, expecting the son to do the same. In another apartment, a wealthy-looking mother sits at the table to dine with her daughter, completely different from her. At the same time, the boy and the girl embark on a nocturnal adventure of transformation, during which they strip off the various stratifications of gender that they have inherited. The streets of the city are transformed into a liberating walkway. When by chance they meet – face to face, body to body – they mirror each other in silence, offering comfort, safety.

1944년 여름 독일 나치 치하의 폴란드 바르샤바. 공장에서 일하며 어머니와 어린 남동생을 부양하는 스테판(요제프 파블로프스키)은 나치로부터 매일 모욕을 당한다. 이에 반나치 저항군에 가담하고 싶지만 위험한 일에 연류되지 말라는 어머니의 부탁으로 갈등하다 결국 친구들과 함께 비밀스러운 봉기 작전에 돌입하고 그 곳에서 알라(소피아 비츨라츠)를 만나 사랑에 빠지게 된다. 1944년 8월 1일, 폴란드 저항군의 반격이 시작되자 스테판은 어머니와의 약속을 저버리고 친구들과 전투에 가담한다. 나치군들이 자신의 집 주변을 점령했다는 소식을 듣고 급히 집으로 향한 스테판은 독일군에 의해 어머니와 어린 남동생이 무자비하게 사살되는 장면을 목격하게 되는데..

최고의 알리바이는 권력! 뉴욕 헤지펀드계의 거물사업가 로버트 밀러(리차드 기어)는 성공한 사업가이자 가정적인 남편과 아버지로 대외적으로 존경 받는 저명인사지만 실상은 프랑스 출신의 예술중개인과 밀회를 즐기고 투자 실패로 인한 사기횡령죄가 발각되기 전 회사를 매각하기 위한 음모를 꾸민다. 어느 날, 예기치 않은 교통사고로 함께 차에 타고 있던 애인이 사망하게 되고 홀로 도망친 밀러는 애인의 사실을 은폐하고자 알리바이를 만들어간다. 교통사고로 불에 탄 차의 운전자가 밀러라는 것을 직감한 형사 브라이언(팀 로스)은 진실을 밝히고자 고군분투한다. 설상가상으로 회사의 투자담당인 딸(브릿 말링)은 밀러의 장부 조작을 눈치 채는데… 과연 밀러는 모든 증거를 은폐하고 제자리로 돌아갈 수 있을까?
