Portugal 1997. A nuclear accident left the the country without energy and divided between zones, some of them interdicted because of the contamination. The economic crisis is dramatic and unemployment is almost total.

화물선의 선원인 폴은 리스본의 항구에 홀로 내려 아무것도 하지 않는 시간을 보낸다. 그는 우연히 발견한 호텔에 묵으면서 8mm 카메라로 주위의 풍경과 자신의 모습을 기록해 아내에게 영상 편지를 보낸다. 실제로 화물선에서 일한 경험이 있는 감독이 담아낸 리스본의 아름다우면서 건조한 풍광이 인상적인 작품.

영화감독 프리드리히는 리스본에서 "세계가 멸망한 날(Day the World Ended)"(로저 코먼, 1955)의 리메이크 작업을 진행하던 중 제작비가 다 떨어져 잠시 촬영을 중지한다. 미국에 있는 제작사의 연락을 기다리는 동안 프리드리히는 스태프들과 무료한 시간을 보내며 도시 곳곳을 돌아다닌다. 1982년 베니스영화제 황금사자상 수상.
