텍사스에서 사건이 발생한다. 남자 하나와 여자 하나가 온 몸이 찢겨진 채 사채체로 발견된 것이다.수사에 합류한 질병 통제 센터는 찢겨진 자국이 사람의 소해으로 보기 어렵다고 판단, 해부를 하던 중 박쥐의 것으로 보이는 발톱을 발견한다. 긴급히 박쥐 전문가 쉴라 박사를 찾는다. 쉴라 박사는 박쥐의 생태와 습성상 전혀 있을 수 없는 일이라 반박한다. 그때서야 맥케이브 박사는 자신이 만들어낸 변종 박쥐임을 실토한다. 집단의 공격성과 포악함을 갖게 된 두 마리 숙주가 탈출해 수 백 만 마리의 박쥐 떼에 이를 감염시키게 되었다고 추측한다. 변이가 계속 되면서 박쥐들은 인간을 공격할 만큼 포악하게 변해만 가는데.
