토마스가 오래 전 사라졌던 소도어 섬의 옛 도시 ‘그레이트 워터튼’을 찾아낸다. 이에 뚱보 사장님은 다가오는 축제, 소도어 데이에 맞춰 다시 찾은 옛 도시를 재건축하기로 선언하고 그 일의 총책임자를 토마스로 임명한다. 마을의 재건축 공사를 돕고 토마스의 예전 업무를 대신 하기 위해 힘세고 커다란 몸집의 새로운 기차 스탠리가 마을에 도착하고, 착하고 성실하기까지 한 스탠리는 마을 친구들로부터 한 몸에 인기를 받기 시작한다. 하지만 웬일인지 스탠리가 온 뒤로 토마스에게는 위험하고 어려운 사건들만 계속 생긴다. 그러던 어느날... 토마스가 갑자기 마을에서 사라진다. 토마스는 과연 어디로 갔을까? 그리고 친구들의 품으로 다시 돌아갈 수 있을까?

The Island of Sodor's railway is to help in the construction of a new airport, but a fierce summer storm and a rivalry between the steam and diesel engines endanger the job.
