Martha is a businesswoman and divorced mother of two children - Augusta and Jack. However, when docile Augusta becomes a teenager, feelings of anger and self-hate cause her personality to undergo a scary transformation, and Martha realizes that this is not just typical teen angst. Augusta begins doing drugs, drinking, and ends up on the streets. Her concerned mother and father reach out to an educational consultant, who advises them to send Augusta to a strict wilderness camp for troubled teens. However, even the institution's experienced and tough administrators find Augusta a difficulty to keep under control. Martha comes to realize that there is no answer to her daughter's behavior.

아이다는 맥너튼 자연사 박물관에서 일하는 곤충학자로 레즈비언이다. 침실 한 가득 사랑스러운 곤충들을 키우지만, 그 때문에 번번히 연애에는 실패한다. 가혹한 실연을 당한 다음날, 그녀의 집으로 정체불명의 기괴한 곤충 한 마리가 배달된다. 그리고, 박물관에서 우연히 만난 자폐적인 여자 미스티와 뜻하지 않게 데이트를 하게 된다. 연애에 성공하기 위해선 절대 벌레들이 우글대는 침실을 보여주면 안 된다는 친구의 충고에 따라 필사적으로 곤충들을 감추지만, 결국 미스티는 베개 속에 숨어있던 기괴한 곤충에게 물리게 되고, 점점 곤충의 모습으로 변해가기 시작한다.

After a family visit, stressed businesswoman Senga Wilson (Madeleine Stowe) is driving with her rebellious daughter, Nat (Mischa Barton), down an ominous highway in the middle of the night. After they pick up a weird teenage hitchhiker (Bijou Phillips), their journey goes awry. Nat decides to give her mom the slip and runs off with the hitchhiker at a rest stop. In a desperate search to find her daughter, Senga learns that Nat has been drawn into an evil cult.
