미국 볼티모어의 한 빈민가에서 기괴한 살인사건이 발생한다. 베테랑 수사관 필즈(루크 에반스 분)는 사건의 현장을 본 순간 그가 6개월 전에 읽었던 에드가 앨런 포(존 쿠삭 분)의 추리소설 [모르그가의 살인] 속 장면을 떠올리게 되고 곧바로 포를 찾아 나선다. 한편 술에 빠져 방탕한 생활을 하던 에드가 앨런 포는 자신의 소설로부터 시작된 살인사건이 믿기지 않던 중 그의 연인 에밀리(앨리스 이브 분)마저 범인에게 납치되자 마침내 그는 광기 어린 눈이 번뜩이기 시작한다. 살인마는 연이은 소설 속 모방살인으로 포를 사건 속에 끌어들이고 포에게 한 통의 메시지를 남긴다. “너와의 게임을 요청한다! 연인을 살리고 싶거든 내가 주는 단서를 인용한 소설을 내일 아침 신문 실어야 한다” 살인마는 포의 소설 속 살인을 그대로 인용한 시체들을 단서로 끊임없이 그를 유인하게 되는데...

Walter is the chief of police in a small Ontario town that has its first murder victim, an attractive young woman who is found naked on the shores of the nearby lake. The woman isn't local and while the Ontario Provincial Police have taken the lead in the investigation, Walter assists where he can. The town is mostly a close-knit Mennonite community and Walter has recently returned to his church. He is also trying to deal with his own temper that led to a violent incident some months before. As the young woman is identified, it becomes apparent that Walter's former love interest may be lying.

Friday night in Toronto’s lower west end. Chatter from a dinner party in Harry and Carol’s nouveau riche condo drifts through an open balcony door, as two freebase cokeheads, Pretty and Johnny, have a party on their own in the alley below. As the dinner guests leave, the hostess is nowhere to be found. Until, a wet thud and a sharp scream rise up to the balcony. Pretty stares in horror at Carol’s body, splayed on the alley floor, as Harry screams for help from above. The sharp burst of police sirens sends the cokeheads running as Peter, a middle aged police officer, sprints from his cruiser to check Carol’s vitals. Rocket forward three months and these five disparate lives begin to cataclysmically intersect through weaving multi-narrative story arcs that release spurts and geysers of long-suppressed sexuality and aggression.
