주인공 마이클 던(폴 그로스)은 제1차 세계대전에 원정군으로 참여하여 전쟁을 치르는 중 포탄에 의한 상처를 입고 후방으로 호송된다. 사라 맨(캐롤라인느 다버나스)를 비롯한 간호사들의 도움으로 몸의 상처는 나아가지만, 참전한 어린 청년들까지 죽여가며 진행되는 전쟁의 잔혹함에 진저리를 친다. 자신을 돌봐준 사라 맨과 사랑에 빠진 마이클은 그녀의 동생 데이비드가 자신이 사랑하는 소녀의 부모에게 인정받기 위해 전쟁에 자원하자 데이비드를 돕기 위해 마이클은 직급을 속이고 다시 전쟁터로 향하는데…
