Captain of Archers
King Louis XI masquerades as a commoner in Paris, seeking out the treachery he is sure lurks in his kingdom. At a local tavern, he overhears the brash poet François Villon extolling why he would be a better king. Annoyed yet intrigued, the King bestows on Villon the title of Grand Constable. Soon Villon begins work and falls for a lovely lady-in-waiting, but then must flee execution when the King turns on him.

When he rescues Justine Pryor and her mother, who are stranded in a broken wagon on his route, he doesn't let them slow him down and gives the ladies an exhilirating ride into Buffalo. He arrives in time to obtain the contract and is then sent by company president Henry Wells to St. Louis to establish a branch office.

세 번의 전과 기록을 갖고 있는 에디 테일러(Eddie Taylor: 헨리 폰다 분)는 사랑하는 여인 조앤 그레이엄(Joan Graham: 실비아 시드니 분)과 조앤을 사랑하는 변호사 스티븐 휘트니(Stephen Whitney: 바톤 맥레인 분)의 도움으로 출감하게 된다. 출감 후 에디는 휘트니가 마련해 준 운수회사에서 조앤과의 달콤한 신혼을 꿈꾸며 새로운 인생을 설계하지만 운수회사 사장은 전과자라는 낙인이 찍인 에디를 작은 꼬투리를 빌미로 몰인정하게 해고하고 만다. 에디는 사장을 찾아가 앞으로 성실하게 일할 것을 다짐하며 사정을 하지만 전과자에 대한 사회의 불신은 에디를 쉽게 받아들이지 않는다. 한편 에디가 전과자라는 것을 안 운수 회사의 동료는 은행을 턴 후 에디가 의심을 받도록 에디의 모자를 현장에 떨어뜨린다. 경찰에 쫓기게 된 에디는 조안을 찾아가 결백을 주장하며 일단 도피할 것을 말하지만 이미 잠복해 있던 경찰에게 붙잡히기 되고, 네 번째 범죄를 저지르면 사형을 당하게 되는 국가법상사형을 선고받는데...
