독일 바이에른에 사는 버늘 부인은 홀로 프란츠, 요한, 안드레아스, 조셉까지 네 아들을 키우며 살고 있다. 막내 조셉이 미국에서 일자리를 얻게 되고, 어머니에게서 여비를 얻어 독일을 떠난다. 한편, 1차 세계대전이 시작되자 이미 입대한 프란츠의 뒤를 이어 요한도 입대를 하고, 안드레아스 역시 징집되어 참전한다. 불행하게도 프란츠와 요한이 동부전선에서 전사하고, 안드레아스 역시 부상을 당한다. 그런데 미국에서 결혼을 하고 식품점을 운영하던 조셉 역시 입영 통지를 받는데, 그는 조국인 독일을 물리쳐야 하는 입장에 선다.
