A gunfighter, stranded in the desert, comes across the aftermath of a stage robbery, in which all the passengers were killed. He takes one of the horses to ride to town to report the massacre, but finds himself accused of it. He also finds himself accused of the murder of the local banker, and winds up hiding in the basement of a house where the local sheriff, who is very sick, lives with his daughter.

"바트"는 감화원으로 보내진다. 시간이 흘러 감화원에서 몇 년을 보내고 군대에서 사격술 교관으로도 근무한 "바트"(죤 달)는 고향에 돌아와 가족과 친구들을 다시 만난다. 어느 날 동네에 들어온 서커스 공연장에서 사격의 명수 "애니 로라"(페기 커밍스)를 본 "바트"는 그녀와 사격술 내기를 하면서 "로라"와 친해지고 뛰어난 사격술 덕분에 서커스 공연단의 일원으로 들어가게 된다. 시간이 흐르면서 "로라"와 서로 사랑하게 된 두 사람은 공연단에서 나와 전국 각지를 돌며 새로운 삶을 꾸려 나가게 된다. 세월이 흐르고 가진 돈이 떨어지기 시작하자 이들은 범죄의 유혹에 빠져들게 된다. 그 두 사람은 작은 도시들을 돌며 귀금속상과 호텔 그리고 주유소 등 가리지 않고 대담한 강도 행위를 계속하게 되는데 이러한 강도 행위는 전파를 타고 고향의 친구들과 가족들에게도 알려지게 된다. 점점 죄책감에 빠저드는 "바트"는 괴로워 하지만 그때마다 "로라"의 치명적인 설득에 빠져들곤 한다. 몇 달이 지난 후 두 사람은 소를 잡는 도살장에 침입하여 돈을 털어 나오다가 도망치는 과정에서 경찰의 추격을 받게 되고 도망치는 과정에서 사람을 죽이면서 이들의 범죄는 돌이킬수 없는 상황으로 이르게 된다. 경찰의 추적망이 서서히 좁혀 지면서 두 사람은 기차를 이용하여 "바트" 누나의 집으로 피신하는데 얼마 지나지 않아 이제는 보안관과 기자가 된 친구들이 이를 눈치채고 찾아오자 그들을 피해 두 사람은 다시 산속 늪지대로 도망가는데...

Slightly more elaborate than most Charles Starrett westerns, Down Rio Grande Way is set in the mid-19th century, when the Republic of Texas was poised to join the Union. Starrett plays Texas Ranger Steve Martin (!), who is dispatched to a "renegade" Texas country that refuses to become part of the good old USA. He discovers that the crux of the problem is a local tax collector (Norman Willis) who, with the help of a crooked newspaper editor (Davision Clark), is systematically robbing the citizens of their hard-earned cash, all the while fomenting anti-American sentiments. Britt Wood takes over from Cliff Edwards as Starrett's comical sidekick, while band singer Rose Ann Stevens makes an impressive acting debut as the heroine.

Two ex-cons plan to kill the range rider marshal who sent them to prison and, when their plan fails, join forces with their former boss, a crooked saloon owner who has the same idea.

When Sheriff Hanley sends for Billy and his pals, they arrive to find him murdered and Ed Slade temporary Sheriff.

Buck Peters arranges for Hoppy, California, Johnny and other cowboys to go to the aid of friends whose cattle are being rustled. Kirby and Evans are pulling off an irrigation project swindle and newspaper editor Scott realizes it and sends for Lee. Lee agrees with Scott and forms a vigilante group to fight the Sheriff and his deputies brought in by Kirby. But a dying Uncle Dan sets the Sheriff straight and this brings the two sides together for the big shootout.

Looking for the killer of his brother, Jack saves the outlaw known as the Mexicali Kid who had collapsed on the desert. Jack joins up with the Kid who leads him to Gorson. Gorson is after a ranch and gets Jack to pose as the heir to the ranch. After the papers are signed he plans to have jack killed. But the Kid recognizes Gorson's henchmen as the men Jack is after and decides to help him.
