Lew is a small time loser with a troubled past and a very big secret. Overhearing a couple plan a kidnapping, Lew is tempted to come up with a scheme of his own. He decides to get to the victim first and then blackmail the real criminals. His plan soon spins out of control.

벌건 대낮에 한 술집에서 살인 사건이 일어난다. 목격자인 리오넬은 눈앞에서 사람이 쓰러지는 모습에 기겁을 하고 총을 쏜 제이크는 리오넬을 달래며 무언가 하던 일을 계속 진행하려고 애를 쓴다. 하지만 결국 리오넬은 현금이 든 돈 가방을 뒤로 하고 술집에서 도망치고 현장에 있던 범인, 술집 주인, 손님, 들이닥친 경관 두 명과 죽은 줄 알았던 살해자는 리오넬이 두고 간 현금을 챙긴다. 이들은 사기극 전문가들로 정해진 배역으로 매번 표적을 정해 사기극을 벌이고 돈을 챙기는 수법을 쓴다. 하지만 다음 날, 미끼 역할을 했던 알폰스가 사체로 발견되고 사기극 멤버인 제이크, 고르도, 마일스는 한 자리에 모인다. 알고 보니, 어제 사기를 쳤던 리오넬은 악명 높은 킹의 회계사로, 그 현금은 킹이 수금한 돈이었던 것이다. 킹이 자신들을 쫓고 있다는 사실을 알게 된 제이크는 킹을 찾아가 거래를 제안한다. 킹이 표적을 정해 주면 그 자에게 사기를 쳐서 얻는 돈을 반으로 나누어 갖기로 말이다. 킹은 자기 부하 한 명을 사기극에 포함하는 조건으로 제안을 수락한다. 킹이 정해 준 표적은 유명한 갑부인 프라이스. 공금 횡령을 쉽게 하기 위해 직접 은행을 세운 대대적인 사기꾼 갑부이다. 제이크는 길에서 만난 소매치기 릴리를 팀에 합류시키고 거사를 준비하는데...
