Tatsumura Yusuke, Toho Advertising's deputy sales manager was a childhood friend of Akiko and Katsuya. In fact, there is a secret that cannot be divulged about the relationship between Akiko and her father and the truth behind his death between these three people. They don't contact each other after they grow up but 25 years later, that secret comes back to Akiko in an extortion letter. Meanwhile, Tatsumura's division suddenly competes in a big project with a budget of 1.8 billion yen. Tatsumura works towards a successful pitch with Tachibana, Hirano, and Totsuka but interference within the company from envious parties and a heated contest with a rival firm remains. Then Tatsumura learns that there is a link between this project and that secret from his past...

일명 아사마산장 사건이라 회자되고 있는 이 사건은, 실화를 바탕으로 만들어졌으며, 범인으로부터 인질 1명을 구해내기위한, 경찰과 범인들간의 사투를 사실적으로 그려낸 영화.

The movie is absurd, and a thoroughly original take on the morale in Japanese society. The images are beautiful, and the people are as cold as the snow that surrounds them. The take on Melville's "Samoraï" from -67 is obvious, but Kobayashi turns the image around and portrays the killer as the weakest person in the movie - haunted by his demanding wife and the moaning contractor, who is one of the most mysterious characters ever portrayed in a movie.

Upon reaching the train station to death, a dejected soul is informed that he is "lucky" and will have another chance at life. He is placed in the body of a 14-year-old boy named Makoto Kobayashi, who has just committed suicide.

Toshiaki Nagashima is a biologist who is doing major research on mitochondria. When his beautiful young wife is tragically involved in a car accident which leaves her brain dead, in desperation he steals her liver from her body in order to recieve the mitochondria from it to resurrect his wife from the dead. The killer mitochondria takes the form of his assistant.

A down-and-out scriptwriter spends his days and nights in the bars of Tokyo. When he is thrown out of a joint because it is closing time, there is always a willing lady to spend the rest of the night with. In the street he has countless semi-philosophical discussions with fellow drinkers, male and female, (shot in black-and-white, as prologue to the different chapters) but in the end it often comes down to one thing: the bottle of whisky that has to be finished. An encounter with a homeless young man with AIDS marks a turning point in the life of the writer.

In the desert of Egypt, Kurata, the CEO of the Japanese corporation Tokokaihatsu, is killed by a sniper. After the news reaches Japan, the CEO's lawyer, Yamamoto, receives a visit from two men that attempt to steal the deceased CEO's will. This is witnessed by two detectives, Tsuzuki and Ōnuki, but they fail to catch the perps. Yamamoto hands the detectives a set of keys before he stops breathing. Tsuzuki and Ōnuki now have to investigate Kurata's murder...

A comedy of a yakuza family that goes into show business.

이마무라에게 처음 칸영화제 그랑프리를 안겨준 작품. 일부 평자들은 와 와 같은 반열의 걸작으로 평가한다. 시대도 장소도 확실하지 않은 일본의 옛날 산속 마을이 무대다. 이곳에는 식량 부족 때문에 사람은 70살이 되면 자식에게 업혀 나라야마 정상에 버려지는 한국의 고려장 같은 풍습이 이어져오고 있다. 오린이라는 헌신적인 노인은 진심으로 슬퍼하는 자식에게 업혀 산으로 향하지만 이것이 신의 부름이라고 생각하며 순응한다. 기노시타 게이스케의 58년작을 리메이크한 것이지만, 이마무라는 여기다 원작자의 에로틱한 소설 하나를 더 끌고 들어와 스토리를 뒤섞어놓는다. 죽음을 향한 노인들의 산행 와중에 인구 억제를 목적으로 장남 이외엔 결혼할 수 없다는 마을의 규율 때문에 벌어지는 성적 소동과, 동물들의 성행위가 교차된다. 이마무라가 평생에 걸쳐 묘사해온 인간이 지닌 외설성과 원시성이 죽음과 마찬가지로 하나의 자연적 과정임이 암시된다. 지나치게 포르노적이라는 비판이 일기도 했지만, 대부분의 서구 평론가들은 이마무라의 대표작으로 올려놓는다.

영화 속 노래의 후렴구이기도 한 ‘에에쟈나이카’는 새로운 사회적 분위기가 만들어지던 에도 말기에 발생한 대중적 운동, 또는 현상을 폭넓게 지칭하는 말이다. 격변의 에도 말기, 한 가난한 농부가 미국에서 일본으로 돌아온다. 겨우 고향으로 돌아왔지만 그는 다시 한 번 힘든 시기를 보내야 한다. 당시 일본 사회의 급격한 변화를 여러 인물과 사건을 통해 스케치하듯 그린 작품. (2017년 한국시네마테크협의회 - 이마무라 쇼헤이 회고전)
