사다코는 소심한 남편과 시어머니에게 부주의하다며 매번 꾸중을 듣는다. 그녀는 남편이 출장간 사이에 집에 침입한 히라오카라는 남자에게 강간을 당한다. 이에 사다코는 자살을 시도하지만 아들 때문에 감히 죽지 못한다. 이틀 후 히라오카는 다시 돌아와 사다코를 범하며 그 후로 사다코에게 강박적인 애정을 추구한다. 사다코는 히라오카를 떼어내기 위해 돈을 줘보기도 하지만 히라오카는 거절한다. 후지하라의 원작을 하세베 게이지와 이마무라 감독이 함께 각색해서 만든 작품. 이마무라 감독의 작품들, 예컨데 등에 등장하는 여성들은 사회적인 약자로 남성에게 강간을 당하거나 모진 수난을 겪기 일수다. 하지만 어떤 어려움 속에서도 좌절하지 않고 당당하고 강한 모습으로 거듭나는 것으로 그려져 이마무라 감독의 일관된 작품관과 여성관을 엿볼 수 있게 한다.

약점잡힌 은행간부가 자기 은행을 터는 과정도 재미있지만, 협박범의 배후가 누구인지 드러나는 과정도 흥미진진하고 서로의 인성 밑바닥까지 드러내보이는 후반부의 구성도 좋다. 은행털이가 돈이 목적이 아니라 사적인 복수가 목적인 것, 은행은 털지만 실제로 없어진 돈이 없다는 점도 참 명민한 시나리오.

In a mock exams, Kanako overtook her classmate Tetsuji to take the lead. That evening, Kanako went to the Yasue Theater in the neighboring town with Eikichi, and saw the affair of her stepmother, Yumi, who should have been resting due to her illness. The man ran away in a hurry, and Yumi confessed that Kanako's mother, Miyako, had also run away for the same reason...

This film was mainly shot in the Japanese skiing resort Hokkaido in 1937-38 and was intended to create support for the coming winter olympics of 1940 in Japan which however were cancelled because of the Japanese-Chinese war. A Japanese production, it was nevertheless made with German involvement in the form of skiing champion Sepp Rist and celebrated cinematographer Richard Angst (who also contributed to the script). Both had regularly worked with the inventor of the mountain film genre, Dr. Arnold Fanck, who had helmed the German-Japanese co-production "Die Tochter des Samurai", also shot by Angst, the year before. Angst apparently stayed in Japan until mid-1939 when he returned to Germany, carrying this film with him. Angst submitted it to the German censors later that year, but for reasons unknown to me it took three more years before the film was finally shown in Germany under the name "Das heilige Ziel" (The Holy Aim). <동경은 좋은 곳>이라는 무성영화를 개작한 오즈의 첫 발성영화. 오즈는 아들과 어머니라는 비유적 수단을 통해 일본의 산업화, 근대화로 인해 야기된 가족 문제를 심도 깊게 포착해내고 있다. 시골의 면직공장에서 일하며 근근이 생활을 연명하는 츠네는 사랑스러운 외아들 료스케의 진학을 위해 많은 희생을 감수한다. 세월이 흘러 료스케는 도쿄에서 대학을 졸업하지만, 불경기로 인해 야학 교사로 밖에는 활동하지 못한다. 아들의 출세를 굳게 믿고 있던 츠네는 아들을 만나기 위해 부푼 마음을 안고 도쿄로 상경하지만, 장성한 료스케의 삶은 어머니의 기대와는 사뭇 다른 상태다.

This pair of gentle yet witty and inventive comedies from the director of The Neighbour's Wife and Mine typify both the formal experimentation of early Japanese sound cinema and the social milieux that Shochiku tended to depict. 'Virtually plotless, and feeling more like comic sketches than fully developed stories,' writes Arthur Nolletti, Jr, 'these light comedies, or farces, take a wholly trivial matter (often a socially embarrassing situation) and use it as a springboard for a succession of gags.' Much of the films' distinction comes from the wit of Gosho's direction, the imaginative use of the new sound technology and the charm of the acting, particularly of the heroines (Kinuyo Tanaka in Bride; Hiroko Kawasaki in Groom). Yet in both films, Gosho finds room for some shrewd observation of character and environment, subtly exploring the values and assumptions of the suburban petit bourgeoisie.

Shigeru, Ôsaki's brother
The story is centered around the devastating experiences of two villagers, Osaki Shuichi, and his cousin, Nishimiura Kinue, when they leave their hometown for the metropolis of Tokyo. They are in love with each other, but Kinue is expected to marry the lawyer Kanda Seiji. In consequence, Shukichi leaves for Tokyo, where he becomes tutor to the son of the rick Iwaki family. The heartbroken Kinue also makes her way to the capital, where she becomes a bar hostess.

This 1932 adaptation is the earliest sound version of the ever-popular and much-filmed Chushingura story of the loyal 47 retainers who avenged their feudal lord after he was obliged to commit hara-kiri due to the machinations of a villainous courtier. As the first sound version of the classic narrative, the film was something of an event, and employed a stellar cast, who give a roster of memorable performances. Director Teinosuke Kinugasa was primarily a specialist in jidai-geki (period films), such as the internationally celebrated Gate of Hell (Jigokumon, 1953), and although he is now most famous as the maker of the avant-garde silent films A Page of Madness (Kurutta ichipeji, 1926) and Crossroads (Jujiro, 1928), Chushingura is in fact more typical of his output than those experimental works. The film ranked third in that year’s Kinema Junpo critics’ poll, and Joseph Anderson and Donald Richie noted that 'not only the sound but the quick cutting was admired by many critics.
