Tsutomu Yoshioka, a Tokyo office worker, is enaged to Mariko, the niece of his company's president. But Yoshioka has a crisis of consence when he remembers his former love Mitsu, a rural girl whom he met and later left while in college. Shimako, a former friend, persuades Yoshioka to meet with Mitsu while she plots to blackmail Yoshioka by photographing the meeting to break up Mariko and Yoshioka.

The story contrasts the life of two doctors, former classmates and now both assistant professors at Naniwa University Hospital in Osaka. The brilliant and ambitious surgeon Goro Zaizen stops at nothing to rise to a position of eminence and authority, while the friendly Shuji Satomi busies himself with his patients and research.

수기모토 도메는 1919년 야마카타의 산촌에서 태어났다. 아버지는 정신지체자, 어머니는 어떤 남자하고도 잠자리를 같이하는 여자. 그래서 도메도 누구의 아이인지 알 수 없다. 그래도 도메는 아버지를 좋아해서 어려서부터 함께 잤다. 도메는 아버지와 자신이 부부라고 생각했다. 도메는 초등학교 졸업 후 방직공장의 공원으로 일하다가 계장인 마츠나미의 여자가 되어, 공장을 그만두고 아이를 낳는다. 농사일을 다시하게 된 도메는 젖이 나오자 정신지체자인 아버지에게 빨아 달라고 한다.

With her family suffering from extreme poverty, Yuko, as the eldest daughter, is sold to a successful brothel in Kyoto. There she is assigned to serve Takamatsu, one of the brothel’s top customers. But while Takamatsu falls madly in love with Yuko, she finds herself attracted to a young priest named Kunugida. Torn by jealousy, Takamatsu hatches an evil plan to tear them apart.

Just afterwards she notices that he is reading a magazine which carries her picture which he crushes and throws under his seat. One of her customers in Tokyo is a pretty girl named Kana for whom she had designed a dress which at first seems quite satisfactory. But a few days later Kana brings it back. It seems her brother thinks it terrible. But when Kana brings the dress back she meets Aya's brother, Takeshi, with whom she becomes friendly and Takeshi gives her a new dress which he smuggles out of his sister's office. When Aya finds Kana's discarded dress and misses one belonging to another customer she goes to see Kana's brother, and to her surprise finds him to be the fellow whose foot she'd stepped upon in the train...

Junai Monogatari AKA Story of Pure Love is about two poor youths, Mitsuko and Kando, rebelling against society in various ways, who are desperately trying to be together despite tortuous circumstances. The film depicts their lives as thieves, menial laborers who can get little pay, society outcasts, and of course, lovers. Junai Monogatari depicts, mostly, their struggles within the Japanese reformatory system and Mitsuko's worsening sickness.

The Angry Street includes a great deal of location shooting in the rebuilt city, including downtown streets, residential neighborhoods, the campus of the University of Tokyo, and the high life of jazzy dance halls. Sudo (Hara Yasumi) and Mori (Uno Jukichi) are two university students who make money by picking up rich girls in dance clubs and conning them into giving them cash. Mori is the brains of the operation, and Sudo is the suave dancer who picks up the girls. Over the course of the film, Sudo becomes involved with three different girls and is drawn into the gangster milieu, which he seems unable to resist even though he is responsible for his mother, grandmother, and sister, Masako (Wakayama Setsuko). In this world of bad boys and girls, Masako is the pillar of strength and moral virtue who finally enables Mori to straighten out.

무더운 여름날, 만원 버스에 오른 초보형사 무라카미(미후네 도시로)는 소매치기에게 권총을 도둑맞는다. 고참 형사 사토(시무라 다카시)의 조언에 따라 사라진 권총의 단서를 추적하는 무라카미. 버스에서 그에게 달라 붙어 있던 중년 여인은 알고 보니 일급 소매치기였다. 무라카미가 그녀를 미행하는 동안 도심 한 복판에서는 총기 강도사건이 일어난다. 거장 구로사와 감독의 초기 수작으로 일본 전후 사회의 매우 리얼한 풍경 묘사는 물론 범죄 수사과정을 하나부터 열까지 꼼꼼하게 좇아가는 치밀함을 느낄 수 있는 정통 형사물이다. 각본가 기쿠시마 류조가 경시청 취재 중 듣게 된 경관 권총 분실 사건을 소재로 만든 영화. 끈적하게 땀이 배일 것 같은 후덥지근한 여름의 분위기와 종전 후 서서히 부흥되어 가고 있는 도쿄의 실상이 매우 리얼하게 담겨 있다. ‘메그레 경감’ 시리즈로 유명한 추리소설가 조르주 시므농의 팬이기도 했던 구로사와는 긴박감 넘치는 추리영화의 틀을 빌려, 전후의 피폐한 현실과 가치관의 혼란을 탁월하게 묘사해 냈다. 모리사키 아즈마에 의해 1973년 리메이크되었으며, 아오야마 신지의 (1997) 역시 직접적인 영향을 받았다. , , 등 많은 미국영화에서 이 작품에 오마주를 바친 장면들을 발견할 수 있으며, 특히 조지 루카스의 에서 오비완 케노비가 라이트 세이버를 떨어뜨린 아나킨을 힐책하는 장면은 사토가 무라카미를 질책하는 장면을 그대로 인용한 것이다.

서양 연극을 도입한 연출가 시마무라는 "인형의 집"을 무대에 올릴 준비를 하는데, 여주인공 노라 역 때문에 고민이다. 그러다 시마무라는 남편과 싸우고 헤어졌다는 여배우 마츠이 스마코를 만나게 되는데, 거침없이 이야기하는 당찬 그녀를 노라 역에 발탁한다. 스마코와 사랑에 빠진 시마무라는 그녀와 함께 하기 위해 가족까지 버리고, 둘은 연극계에서도 쫓겨난다. 20세기 초에 활약했던 여배우 마츠이 스마코를 소재로 한 나가타 히데오의 희곡을 각색했다.
