사립탐정이 된 잭 데드（팀 매터스）는 이혼을 원하는 아내 레나（헬렌 헌트）와 문제를 겪는다. 어느날 임무 수행 중에 납치된 잭은 TCL 기구（시간여행장치）에 실려 2083년 미래의 로스엔젤레스로 인도된다. 불타버린 폐허, 깡패들이 싸우는 거리, 납치되어 시간을 뛰어 넘은 비정상적인 사람들을 발견한 그는 충격에 빠진다.

레이먼드 아빌라는 LA 경찰국의 내부 조사과로 승진 전보된 형사다. 그는 동료 활발한 여형사 에이미 윌런스와 함께 경찰들의 직권 남용 불법행위를 조사하던 중 외근 전문 경관 데니스 펙이 범죄 조직과 연루되어 있음을 눈치채고 이를 추적한다. 데니스는 경찰 신분을 이용하여 거리의 검은 돈을 받아가며 암흑 세계를 지켜주는 야비한 형사였다. 또한 동료인 벤 스트렉츠의 아내 페니와 간통을 저지르면서 살인 청부업자를 고용해 자신의 치부를 알고 있는 벤마저 없앤다. 레이먼드가 자신을 수사한다는 것을 안 데니스는 레이먼드의 아내 캐서린을 유혹함으로서 그를 더욱 분노하게 한다. 내부 조사관인 동료 여경찰 에이미와 손잡고 데니스의 비리를 벗겨나가던 레이먼드는 청부살해의 현장 목격자를 찾아낸다. 위기에 몰린 데니스는 결국 레이먼드의 집으로 가 캐서린을 농락, 이때 찾아온 레이먼드는 마침내 그에게 총탄을 발사한다.

He finds that our blood is nourishing and that at least one source of it is a steady stream of transfusions. He hypnotizes a Dr. to provide them and has his blond nurse move in to administer them.
