아들과 아내를 잃고 홀로 살던 ‘테츠로’(코바야시 카오루)는 의식을 잃은 채 강기슭에 쓰러져있던 한 청년을 발견한다. ‘신이치’(야기라 유야)라는 이름 외에 아무것도 자신에 대해 이야기하지 않는 이 청년에게 ‘테츠로’는 방을 내어주고 목공소에서 일을 가르친다. 처음 보는 ‘신이치’를 이상하리만치 챙겨주며 아들처럼 대하지만, 그들 사이에는 각자의 비밀이 존재한다. 어느 날, 낯선 이방인에게 호기심을 품던 마을 사람들 사이에서 ‘신이치’에 대한 이상한 소문이 돌기 시작하고 마음속 깊은 상실감을 지닌 ‘테츠로’와 과거를 지우고 다시 살고 싶었던 ‘신이치’는 다시 한번 방황과 혼돈의 시간을 지나게 된다.
