물건을 찾아 숱하게도 헤매는 뉴욕 양키스팀의 스카우터 알 페콜(Al Percolo: 알버트 브룩스 분). 매번 구단주에게 퇴짜를 맞고 혼줄이 난 그는 이번엔 구단주의 말을 쫓아 멕시코로 향한다. 오뉴월에 땀을 비오듯 흘리며 멕시코의 촌구석까지 고생고생하며 찾아 온 알. 마침내 그 마을의 야구 경기장에서 그렇게도 찾던 선수감인 스티브(Steve Nebraska: 브렌든 프레이저 분)를 만나게 된다. 왼팔, 오른팔을 자유자재로 사용하며 휘둘르기만 하면 홈런을 치는 기적같은 솜씨의 스티브. 뉴욕에 입성한 스티브는 마운드 테스트와 인터뷰에서의 사고 등 우여곡절 끝에 양키스 구단에 입단하게 되고 건강진단을 받게 된다. 그런데 이게 웬일인가! 검사결과 전혀 생각지도 못했던 뜻밖의 진단이 나오게 되는데.
