2015년 미국 흑인사회를 대변하며 긴 역사를 가진 엠마누엘 교회에서 총기 난사 사건이 일어났다. 교회에 모여 성경공부를 하던 흑인 성도들은 문을 열고 들어온 백인 청년 딜란 루프(Dylann Roof)를 반갑게 맞이했다. 하지만 그는 총을 꺼내 그 자리에 있던 사람들을 향해 난사했고, 그날, 9명이 총에 맞아 사망했다. 이 사건은 뉴스를 통해 전 세계로 알려졌고 많은 이들이 혐오 범죄를 심각한 사회문제로 받아들이기 시작했다. 브라이언 아이비(Brian Ivie) 감독은 이 사건 후 살아남은 생존자들과 희생자 유가족의 이야기를 카메라에 담았다. 남겨진 것은 상처와 고통뿐이지만 그들은 용서에 관해 이야기한다. 끝없이 반복되는 혐오와 범죄 속에서 그들의 용기와 믿음은 사회에 희망을 선물하고 공동체를 지속시키는 힘이 된다.
