His fluid directing style playfully takes reference from works of art and legendary filmmakers and creates something unique and original. Life here smells of cold French fries, cheap cigarettes, vermouth and stale beer. As a kid, Pim dreams of a better life, imagining princesses and beauty queens. In a colourful series of mythical referential images, his fragile dreams get so unreal, that the enthusiasm for seeing his friend again turns into anxiousness.

A man faces his approaching death. He takes a journey, his last perhaps, and ends up at the “Pensão Globo” in Lisbon, where he sets out on aimless excursions through the city. The film depicts a life in a state of transition. ”Sometimes it's like I'm already gone, become a ghost of myself. (M.M.)

17세기, '메이콘(Macon)'이란 가상의 도시. 불임이 전염병처럼 창궐하는 이 곳에 사람들이 한 노파의 산고를 지켜보기 위해 대극장에 몰려든다. 무대 위에선 흉측한 모습의 늙은 여자가 진통을 하고 있고, 관중은 상상 임신이나 기형아가 나올 것이라는 독설을 퍼붓는다. 13번째의 진통만에 세상에 나온 아기는 뜻밖에 건강하고 아름답다. 그들은 이제 그를 '베이비 오브 메이콘(Baby Of Macon)'이라 부른다. 노파의 딸(The Daughter: 줄리아 오몬드 분), 즉 아기의 누나는 자신의 어머니를 지하에 가두고 자기가 대신 엄마 행세를 하며 부와 권력을 얻으려 한다. 덧붙여 자신의 처녀성을 만인에게 확인시키며 아기의 주가를 높이려 한다. 그리고 그녀는 파티장에서 주교 아들(The Bishop's Son: 랄프 피네스 분)을 마구간으로 유혹한다. 둘의 관계가 시작될 무렵 바람이 불고 찬란한 빛이 들어오는 가운데 마구간 문을 열고 들어오는 아기. 남자는 죽고 그녀의 성모 마리아 가면은 벗겨진다. 크게 노한 주교(The Bishop: 필립 스톤 분)는 그녀를 죽이고 싶어하지만, 이 도시에서는 처녀에겐 사형을 내릴 수 없다는 법이 있다. 주교와 귀족들은 머리를 맞대고 궁리를 하기 시작한다. 결국 그녀에겐 '죽을 때까지 병사들에게 성적인 봉사를 하라'는 형벌이 내려진다. 커튼 뒤로 흘러나오는 병사의 거친 숨소리와 처녀의 외딘 비명. 그녀는 208번째의 강간에서 죽고 만다. 한편, 교회 안에서는 낙찰이 시작된다. '베이비 오브 메이콘'의 피는 5만 크라운. 교회는 더욱 악랄한 수법으로 아기를 이용해 돈을 벌어들인다. 이미 숨결이 끊긴 아기. 교회 안에서는 기이하고도 장엄한 장례식이 열린다.
