1944년 8월 연합군의 노르망디 상륙작전 이후 퇴각을 하게 된 독일군은 파리의 한 박물관에 수집, 보관되어 있던 프랑스의 국보급 미술품을 발트하임 대령의 지휘 아래 독일로 이전하기 위한 작업을 한다. 철도원으로서 레지스탕스에 몸담고 있는 철도원 라비쉬는 동료들과는 달리 미술품의 보호에 대해 부정적인 견해를 지니고 있었다. 이미 철도원들에는 기차에 실린 물건이 무엇인지 공공연히 알려진 상태에서 비조직적인 저지가 이루어진다. 파리의 베어 역을 출발한 기차는 한 구간을 달려 라인강역에 도착하여 오일관 고장으로 멈춰 서게 된다. 고의로 기차의 오일관에 손상을 주어 기차를 파손한 빠빠부는 독일군 장교 헤른 소령에게 이 사실이 들통이 나면서 현장에서 사형이 집행이 되고 이를 저지하던 라비쉬는 기차의 수리와 운행을 강요받게 된다. 본 발트하임 대령은 라비쉬로 하여금 독일국경 근처의 역인 세인트 어폴트 역까지 운행할 것을 명령하는데...
