바닥을 쓸고, 카페트를 정리하고, 지우기 힘든 얼룩을 제거하는 일이 주인공 콜의 직업이다. 그는 어느 날 알 수 없는 집으로 향하고 욕실에서 발가벗은 채 피범벅이 되어있는 남자를 만난다. 그는 짧은 대화 뒤에 권총을 입에 넣고 자살을 하는데, 주인공은 그 일로 정신병원에 입원해 치료를 받는다. 한 달이 지나 퇴원이 다가왔지만 의사들은 두 달간의 추가 치료를 권한다. 하지만 주인공은 거절하고 병원에서 퇴원을 하는데, 그리고 일년 후, 콜은 여전히 청소 직원으로 일하면서 하루하루를 아내와 아들을 그리워하며 살아간다. 퇴근시간 무렵 그는 고객의 견적 요청을 받게 되고 동료의 부탁으로 어쩔 수 없이 고객의 집으로 향한다. 그리고 그는 그곳에서 알 수 없는 환청에 시달리게 되는데...
