싱글맘 소피아는 딸 엘레나와 함께 새로운 집으로 이사를 한다. 옛 파시스트 정권 시절 학질 모기에 의한 전염과 질병으로 버려진 땅이었던 폰티노 습지대를 농장으로 개간하여 도시로 발전시킨 이 곳으로 이사를 온 소피아는 이사하던 날 지하에서 이상한 옷장을 발견하고 집으로 옮긴다. 어느 날, 교통 사고를 당한 소피아와 엘레나는 다행히 목숨을 건지지만 교통사고 때 앓던 이가 빠졌다는 엘레나는 퇴원 이후 이상한 얘기를 하기 시작한다. 옷장 속에 이빨요정이 있다며 이상한 그림을 그리고, 학교에서 친구들의 젓니를 옛날 동전을 주고 사 모으기 시작하는데...
