당연한 것이 당연하지 않았던 그때, 자유와 평등을 위해 목숨을 걸고 싸웠던 흑인 여성 해리엇 터브먼의 실화를 담았다. 해리엇은 미국 남부 메릴랜드에서 노예의 딸로 태어나 북부 필라델피아로 탈출했다. 그녀는 노예들의 탈출을 돕는 조직 ‘지하철로’에서 길을 인도하는 ‘차장’으로 활동하며 약 70여 명의 노예들을 자유로 이끌었고, 남북전쟁에 종군하여 콤바히 강 작전에서 750여 명의 노예들을 구출하기도 했다.
