영화와 무대를 오가던 스타 토니 헌터는 자신이 한물갔다는 느낌을 갖는다. 그의 친구 레스터와 릴리는 토니의 완벽한 컴백 무대가 될 공연을 제안하고, 토니도 동참하기로 한다. 하지만 거물급 연출가 제프리 코르도바가 합류해 극에 ‘파우스트’의 음울한 재해석을 가미하면서 토니는 불안에 빠진다. 뮤지컬과 쇼 비즈니스의 세계를 찬양한 영화로 이미 쉰을 넘긴 프레드 아스테어에 대한 미넬리의 오마주가 담긴 작품. 은막의 스타가 뮤지컬 세계로 복귀하는 과정을 통해 뮤지컬의 매혹을 그리고 있다. 프레드 아스테어와 시드 채리스가 공원에서 달빛을 맞으며 춤을 추는 장면과 필름누아르를 뮤지컬의 춤과 음악으로 표현한 영화 후반부 장면이 환상적이다.

아네트는 선천적인 다리의 장애를 수영과 발레 교습으로 극복해 낸다. 아버지를 따라 런던으로 이주한 그녀는 템스강을 가로지르는 마라톤 수영으로 명성을 얻게 되고 이후 미국으로 건너가 결국은 일과 사랑 모두에서 성공을 거둔다. 호주의 수영 스타인 아네트 켈러만의 인생을 그려낸 전기 영화로 미국의 수영스타 에스더 윌리암스가 주연을 맡았다.

아마츄어 쇼 코미디언인 돈 록우드(진 켈리)와 코스모(도날드 오코너)는 공연을 하며 이곳저곳을 떠돌아다니다 뜻대로 되지않자 새 일자리를 얻기위해 헐리우드로 온다. 그런데 우연찮게 돈 록우드는 마뉴멘탈 영화사의 스턴트맨 역을 따내게 되고, 당시 최고의 인기를 누리고 있던 여배우인 리나 레이먼트(쟌 하겐)와 함께 다수의 영화에 출연함으로써 단연 스타로 급부상하게 된다. 그러나 화려한 영광도 잠시, 헐리웃 영화계가 무성영화에서 유성영화 체제로 전환됨으로써 목소리 연기가 너무나 형편없는 리나 레이먼트 때문에 영화를 완전히 망치게 되는데...
