A teenage delinquent who goes on a drunken joyride is left in jail overnight by his parents in the hope that he might learn a lesson from it. But events follow which result in the boy spending far longer behind bars than anyone had foreseen.

택시 기사인 테드 스트라이커(Ted Striker: 로버트 헤이스 분)와 스튜어디스인 일레인(Elaine Dickinson: 줄리 헤거티 분)은 오랜 연인 사이. 그러나 과거 공군 조종사로 참전했던 테드가 작전 수행 도중 전사한 동료들에 대한 기억으로 인해 일종의 비행 공포증을 앓게 되고, 전우의 죽음이 자신의 판단 착오 탓이라며 하루하루 자책하며 살아가자 견디다 못한 일레인은 결별을 선언한다. 이에 테드는 떠나는 일레인을 설득하고자 엉겁결에 그녀가 승선한 시카고행 209편기에 오르게 되고, 비행 공포증을 이겨내고자 과거 일레인과의 추억담을 옆좌석 사람들에게 들려준다. 그러던 중 기내 식사로 생선을 먹은 승객들이 식중독 증세를 보이고, 기장(Captain Oveur: 피터 그레이브스 분)을 비롯한 조종사들마저 정신을 잃게 된다. 위기 상황에 처한 여승무원들은 조종 경험이 있는 승객을 수소문하고 마침내 테드가 조종대를 잡게 된다. 1시간 내에 병원으로 후송되지 못하면 생명이 위태로운 승객들. 테드는 시카고 공항에 불시착하고자 하지만 되살아나는 과거의 악몽으로 상황은 어려워져만 간다. 하지만 위기 상황에서 지휘를 맡은 노의사 러막크(Doctor Rumack: 레슬리 닐슨 분)의 말에 감명을 받아 마침내 용기를 얻어 여객기를 무사히 착륙시킨다. 그리고 일레인의 사랑도 되찾는다.

로스엔젤레스를 떠나 네바다를 거쳐, 콜로라도와 록키 산맥을 지나 캔자스, 미시시피강을 건너 시카고까지 가는 대륙 횡단 열차 실버 스트릭. 동생 결혼식에 참석하기 위해 이 시카고행 특급 실버 스트릭에 탑승한 죠지 칼드웰(George Caldwell: 진 와일더 분)은 우연히 알게 된 힐리(Hilly Burns: 질 크레이버그 분)란 여인과 사랑에 빠진다. 그러나 힐리의 상관인 미술 사학자 슈레이너 박사가 살해당하는 사건이 발생하면서 '조용한 남자' 죠지는 복잡한 사건에 휘말려들어 삶과 죽음의 경계선을 자유자재로 넘나든다. 박사의 살해범인 악당 데브로우(Roger Devereau: 패트릭 맥구한 분)는 찾고 있던 '렘브란트의 편지'를 손에 넣자마자 죠지를 기차에서 내던져 버린다. 복수의 화신이 된 죠지는 악착같이 실버 스트릭의 뒤를 따른다. 어렵사리 힐리와 재회하여 그녀를 사랑하는 마음을 확인한 그는 FBI의 도움을 받아 데브로우를 체포할 기회를 잡는다. 그러나 데브로우의 완강한 저항 덕분에 수백 Km의 시속으로 달리던 실버 스트릭은 시카고 역구내로 돌진해 들어간다.

In the first, Karen Nash tries to get her inattentive husband Sam's attention to spruce up their failing marriage. In the second, brash film producer Jesse Kiplinger tries to get his former one-time flame Muriel to see him for what he stands for. In the third, Roy Hubley and his wife Norma try and try to get their uncertain-of-herself daughter out of the bathroom before her approaching wedding.

Young and awkward, The Coast-Guard's ensign Thomas Garland suffers from the comparison with his late father, a war hero. Which does not prevent him from falling for pretty Kate Fairchild, a young woman who runs a sailing school. Of course the way he expresses his deep sympathy for the lady leaves to be desired. And the situation does not improve when a trio of bumbling jewel thieves interferes.
