질로라모는 판에 박힌 일상을 지루하게 살아가고 있다. 뭔가 알 수 없는 그 무엇을 기다리며 거의 10년전부터 스위스의 루가노 호텔에서 그저 무미한 일상을 보내고 있는 것이다. 그의 생활은 일정한 궤도 내에서 한 치의 흐트러짐 없이 반복되는 일상이 기다리고 있을 뿐이며 그는 그것을 벗어나는 삶을 용납하지 않는다. 주변의 인위적인 인간관계나 개인 감정 따윈 안중에도 없고 그 또한 스스로 아무 감정이 없다. 아무 얘깃거리도 없는 것이다. 그러던 어느 날 그가 그의 모든 삶의 규칙을 깨고 호텔 바텐더인 소피아와 몇 마디의 대화를 나누기로 결심을 한다. 그러자 삽시간에 엄청난 변화가 밀려들어 오면서 그의 삶은 송두리째 일대 변혁을 맞게 된다.
