브라질의 남부의 작은 항구도시 포르토 알레그레를 배경으로 하는 이야기는 노동자 계층의 청춘 캐릭터 일군을 둘러싸고 벌어진다. 고교를 중퇴하고 복사가게에서 일하는 열아홉의 안드레는 이웃집 실비아를 좋아한다. 옷가게 판매원으로 일하는 실비아에게 말을 걸고 싶지만 돈이 없어 옷을 사러 가지 못한다. 안드레의 동료 마리네스는 잘빠진 몸매로 외국인들을 사귀지만, 그녀를 위해 목숨이라도 내놓을 카르도소는 그녀의 주변에 머문다. 이들의 공통점은 이곳을 떠난 ‘다른 삶’이다. 안드레는 상황을 타개할 묘안을 발견한다. 그는 복사기를 이용해 위조지폐를 만들어 실비아를 찾아가고, 점점 더 많은 시간을 보내게 된다. 사랑에 빠진 두 남녀는 점점 더 많은 돈이 필요해진다. 자신이 사랑 실비아가 의붓아버지에게 학대받는 것을 알게 된 안드레는 실비아를 구해내고 새로운 삶을 살겠다는 꿈을 꾼다. 과연 가진 것 없는 젊은이들의 의기투합은 현실의 덜미를 벗어날 수 있을까. 감독의 고향을 배경으로 한 이 영화는 40대 감독의 작품이라곤 믿기 어려울 만큼 청춘의 감수성이 살아있다.
