But when a mysterious woman moves in next door and befriends the younger boy, Bart, he begins a strange transformation and displays accusatory behavior towards Cathy and Christopher. When Christopher discovers their mysterious neighbor is, in fact, his mother Corrine Dollanganger, all of the family's long-hidden secrets are revealed in a tragic climax.

시인이 되고 싶어 하는 에이미는 자신에게 재능이 있다고 믿고 여러 응모전에 도전하지만 모두 거절당한다. 부모님은 독립하라고 재촉하고 일이 쉽게 구해지지 않자, 그녀는 성인용품 가게 ‘어덜트 월드’에 취업한다. 가게 매니저로 일하는 알렉스는 성실하지만, 에이미는 가게에서 일하는 걸 수치스럽게 생각하고 머릿 속엔 온통 시 생각뿐이다. 그러던 중 자신이 광적으로 좋아하는 시인, 랫 빌링스를 우연히 만나 제자로 받아달라고 조른다. 당연히 가게 일은 뒷전으로 밀리고, 알렉스와도 다투게 된다. 랫은 그녀를 제자로 받아주지만, 집안일만을 시킬 뿐 자신의 시를 평가해 달라는 에이미의 요구에는 요지부동이다. 그러던 어느 날 새롭게 준비하는 시선집에 에이미의 시를 넣고 싶다고 말하는 랫. 하지만 그녀의 생일 선물로 받은 그 책의 제목은 ‘최악의 시, 형편없는 시 모음집’이다. 유명한 작가들의 신랄한 평가를 보고 충격을 받은 에이미는 계속해서 시를 쓸 수 있을까?
