노동 계급 출신인 크리스 스탬프와 명문가에서 태어난 키트 램버트는 1960년대 초반 스튜디오에서 처음 만난 이후, 둘만의 영화 만들기를 계획한다. 로큰롤 밴드 매니저를 하면서 밴드의 이야기를 영화로 만들고, 이를 발판으로 진짜 영화감독이 되겠다는 것이다. 이들은 피트 타운센드, 로저 달트리, 키스 문, 존 엔트위슬로 구성된 '더 후'를 발견한다. 예술적 재능이 뛰어난 키트는 피트에게 영국 젊은이들의 문화인 모드 운동을 주도하는 노래와 공연 연출 아이디어를 끊임없이 제시한다. 1965년 밴드는 모드족을 대변하는 노래 'My Generation'으로 대대적인 성공을 거두고, 1967년에는 유럽 투어에 오른다. 밴드 결성 5주년인 1969년에는 록 오페라 앨범 'Tommy'로 전환점을 맞이 한다. 그런데 키트의 약물중독과 정신질환 증세가 심각해지면서 이들의 관계에 균열이 깊어지는데...
